Top football and basketball schools (Hoops & Helmets)

With Kansas beating Florida in basketball, and North Carolina losing earlier, there is a possibility that:

a) Ohio State will be #1 in football and basketball at the same time.

b) Ohio State could be #1 and play #2 in basketball the same year that it plays the #2 team three times in football.

Did either of these happen before? I seem to remember being #1 in both sports the same year back in the 1960s.

(#1 in football and basketball at the same time) According to a Texas site, Notre Dame did it in January 1974 (see below):

AUSTIN, Texas -- With its current Top 2 rankings in both The Associated Press' football and men's basketball polls, The University of Texas has moved into some select company. This marks just the seventh time in NCAA history that one school ranks among the Top 2 in the AP poll in football and men's basketball at the same time.
Texas is just the fourth school to accomplish the feat, joining Michigan, Notre Dame and Ohio State. It also marks the first time since Jan. 14, 1986 (Michigan) that this has been achieved.
The Associated Press began its football poll in 1936 and its men's basketball poll on Jan. 20, 1949.

Here's a list of the all-time Top 2 AP football/men's basketball combinations:

? TEXAS. Currently in its second week. No. 2 in football (current). No. 2 in men's basketball (Preseason - current).

? Michigan in 1985-86. No. 2 in football final poll (Jan. 3, 1986). No. 2 in men's basketball (Dec. 31, 1985 - Jan. 14, 1986).

? Ohio State in 1979-80. No. 1 in football (Dec. 3, 1979 - Jan. 2, 1980). No. 2 in men's basketball (Dec. 18, 1979).

? Michigan in 1976-77. No. 2 in football (Nov. 22, 1976 - Jan. 3, 1977). No. 1 in men's basketball (Preseason - Dec. 28, 1976).

? Notre Dame in 1973-74. No. 1 in football final poll (Jan. 3, 1974). No. 1 in men's basketball (Jan. 2, 1974 - Jan. 22, 1974).

? Notre Dame in 1973-74. No. 1 in football final poll (Jan. 3, 1974). No. 2 in men's basketball (Feb. 19, 1974 - March 5, 1974).

?Ohio State in 1961-62. No. 2 in football final poll (Dec. 4, 1961). No. 1 in men's basketball (Preseason - March 13, 1962).

All of this is great, but I want Oden back in time for that Dec 23rd match up with the Gators. My brother and I will have a lot riding on that game, him being a UF alum. That win would be our "WE'RE HERE" announcement to college basketball.

I guess we'll find out for sure how good we are next week against UNC. If we shoot anything like we did the first half Friday night, then we will be a legit No 1.

Being ranked No 1 in basketball is nice, but does not have nearly the same meaning nor magnitude that it does for football.

Now, NCs for both - that is the goal!
And why not get NCs for both men's and women's BB while we're at it?

Ohio State now owns the #1 Ranking in both CFB and Mens CBB.

The Buckeyes moved up to #1 after losses by Florida and North Carolina this week. UCLA is #2.

The Buckeyes play North Carolina this week, so hopefully we can hang out to that #1 spot for a while.

It would be just the best year of all time if we could take the National Championships in BOTH major mens sports this year. I know that is counting so many chickens before they have hatched, but it seems a real possibility.

Not to be too corny, but i think we all need to take a mental snapshot of this moment. tOSU is atop the sports world in football and mens b-ball along with the womens b-ball being in the top 10.
Yo dude, it's not all the men. Last year the WOMEN won the big ten. It just so happened the men won the BB and the football titles too.
Were you savoring the moment last year?

no prbably not, as 'unfair' as it seems men sports draw larger audiences then women.. and as such get more attention.. it's all about the dollars

but this moment isn't like last years.. we werent in the NC last year in football.. and while basketball is a great game.. it'll always be second fiddle to football at tOSU, at least in the immediate future

plus we got the #1 recruits in football & basketball (men) and now have a chance to win both national titles.. i think 1 other team was ranked 1 in both sports at the same time and thats over the course of a 100 years.. and last year we weren't #1 in either.. so i dont think this compares to last year.. and yes I will savior this moment because its a once in a 100 year type of thing

This is a great era for Ohio State sports and, with due respect and appreciation for Gene Smith's efforts, we can all thank Andy Geiger. Andy, if your reading this, you rock!

From OSU:

OHIO STATE 3RD SCHOOL TO BE NO. 1 IN FOOTBALL, MEN'S BASKETBALL
Two schools, UCLA and Notre Dame, have been ranked No. 1 in both football and men's basketball at the same time, according to research performed by Tim Bourret, Clemson sports information director, who sought the information for a book project. Ohio State (6-0) moved to the No. 1 spot in men's basketball Monday in the USA Today/ESPN coaches poll and to the No. 3 spot in the Associated Press writers poll. The Buckeye football team (12-0) is No. 1 in both polls, as it has been the entire 2006 season. UCLA was No. 1 in both sports the week of Nov. 13-19 in 1967. The Bruins were No. 1 in the AP and UPI football polls that week and had won the national championship in men's basketball the previous March. The first poll of the college basketball season that fall was on Dec. 5, 1967. UCLA was No. 1. The Bruins then lost to USC in football, 21-20, in the next Saturday (Dec. 9, 1967) to drop from No. 1 spot in football. Notre Dame won the national championship (football) in the AP poll with a 24-23 win over Alabama in the Dec. 31, 1973 Sugar Bowl. The Fighting Irish basketball team then defeated UCLA 71-70 in basketball to end the Bruins' 88-game winning streak and move to No. 1 in both basketball polls. That game was played Jan. 19, 1974 and Notre Dame was ranked No. 1 the next Monday. The Irish stayed No. 1 in basketball for just that week before traveling to UCLA for a rematch the following Saturday (Jan. 26, 1974, where they lost to the Bruins. Both UCLA (Nov. 13, 1967) and Notre Dame (Jan. 21, 1974) were No. 1 for just one week in both football and men's basketball.
