College football's five best coaches

Rich Cirminiello of College Football News ranks for FLORIDA TODAY the top five coaches in college football today:

1. Bob Stoops, Oklahoma. Stoops inherited a Sooner program in disrepair, and quickly turned them into perennial national championship contenders.

2. Nick Saban, LSU. A defensive guru and master motivator, Saban is college football's version of Bill Belichick.

3. Ralph Friedgen, Maryland. Plenty of programs missed the boat on the longtime assistant, who didn't get his first head job until he was 53.

4. Jim Tressel, Ohio State. Well-coached teams win close games. Since 2002, Tressel's Buckeyes are 14-1 in games decided by seven points or less.

5. Mark Richt, Georgia. Florida State's offense hasn't been the same since Richt left for Athens four years ago.[/font]

My top five would be.......

1. JIM TRESSEL
2. BOB STOOPS
3. NICK SABAN
4. PETE CARROL
5. MARK RICHT
 
I would have to say:

1. Jim Tressel - Won a NC his second year and has only lost 2 games in last 2 1/2 years.

2. Bob Stoops - see above ... except that he tends to drop games he shouldn't.

3. Nick Saban - defensive master mind.

4. Petey - turned a very bad team into a very good team ... team is great in big games.

5. Kirk Ferentz - took one of the big tens worst and turned it into one of the big tens best.

others:

Mark Richt - nice program but they choke it up like a cooper team.

Ralph Friedgen - nice program but until they have a season with less that 2 losses I just cant put him the the top five.


I got bad rep points for this post. My question is why? Have some balls and tell me why you are sending me bad rep points.

1. Mack Brown
2. LLoyd Carr
3. Ron Zook
4. George O'Leary
5. Titty Amato

Oops, wrong list.

1. Jim Tressel

3. Petey Carroll
4. Nick Saban
5. Kirk Ferentz - I'd hate to see how good his teams would be if Iowa could land better athletes.

Here's my reasoning: granted, Carr loses a game or two each season that he shouldn't. But, he's great in big games: has a winning record against OSU and he lost his first game to a Top 5 team in '02 (I think he's like 8-1 in those games). He might be the best recruiter in the Nation (scUM gets boatloads of talent from all across the country and has no real talent base in their home state). And, he's proven that he can run the table, which is more than I can say for a lot of other guys on that list: Nick Saban, Pete Carroll, etc.

And, IMO, a lot of the other ones mentioned have warts:

Nick Saban did two things at MSU: jack and shit. And, he had some pretty good players. I can't put him up there for backing into a National Championship last year. If he runs the table one of these years, then we have a dilemna.

Pete Carroll: Hasn't proven he can run the table yet, and loses a lot of games that he shouldn't. He lost 2 games in '02 with one of the best teams in the country, and lost to the Fighting Tedfords with the best team in the country last year.

Ralph Friedgen: no way. Maryland's done a nice job, but come on. He hasn't proven that he could shine Carr's shoes yet.

Mark Richt: hasn't shown me a thing yet. He gets schooled by RON ZOOK at the Cocktail Party each year. Compare that to what Carr has done against his biggest rival.

Kirk Ferentz: Maybe. But he needs more of a body of work, IMO.
