Tommy Amaker (official thread)

Mark me down as one who believes Amaker and Harvard are a good fit. Tommy is a good man, and smart, but not the caliber of coach that you must be to be successful at the high-major level. But I think he'll do fine at Harvard.

I agree, Amaker and Harvard will be a "good fit".

Amaker accepts offer to coach at Harvard
DETROIT (AP) - Harvard hired Tommy Amaker to coach its men's basketball team, less than a month after he was fired by Michigan.

"I called today and accepted the offer," Amaker told The Associated Press on Wednesday. "It's a terrific opportunity for me. I've been fortunate to be associated with some of the finest academic institutions in the country, and none is greater than Harvard."
The hiring was first reported by FOXSports.com's Jeff Goodman.
Amaker, who played at Duke and was a Blue Devils assistant, has been a head coach at Michigan and Seton Hall.
"His experience as a player and assistant at Duke, where athletic and academic success is paramount, makes him a terrific fit," Harvard Athletic Director Bob Scalise said in a statement. "We're looking forward to the support of the Harvard community as we pursue our first Ivy League championship in men's basketball."
Frank Sullivan's contract with Harvard was not renewed after the Crimson went 12-16 overall and 5-9 in the Ivy League last season, and 178-245 over 16 years. Harvard hasn't played in the NCAA tournament since 1946. Amaker was fired March 17 by Michigan after failing to lead the Wolverines to the NCAA tournament during his six seasons there. Michigan was 22-13 last season, 109-83 overall with three 20-win seasons, but just 43-53 in the Big Ten under Amaker.

I don't think he really got a fair shot at that state up north.

I don't think he got a fair shot either, considering they were on probation (which wasn't his doing) 5 of his 6 years. I had to of hurt his recruiting efforts.

From SI.COM:

UCLA has an open scholarship and a need for a shooting guard. Alex Legion, a 6-4, 210-pounder from Detroit by way of Oak Hill Academy , may fit that bill. Legion, who signed a letter of intent to play at Michigan, was released from that letter when Tommy Amaker was fired. Legion has indicated he is interested in UCLA, Kentucky, Connecticut and Kansas. A source close to Legion says, "Alex's first choice is UCLA right now." -- Los Angeles Times

Ivy League schools aren't supposed to have good basketball teams, are they? They have teams for fun, so they can relax their weary minds with sports, but no one expects them to be a powerhouse. They're supposed to suck. A good Ivy League team might rip the fabric of the universe.

Tommy Amaker, coach of Harvard's men's basketball team, might not have gotten that memo. The New York Times reported that Amaker has been considering players whose academic record doesn't meet Harvard standards. Plus, according to the NYT, members of Amaker's team met with potential players when they shouldn't: "Amaker?s top assistant, Kenny Blakeney, had traveled a long distance to play pickup basketball with a recruit during periods when the N.C.A.A. does not allow contact with prospective players."

Harvard announced today that it will investigate the accusations.
