Two Ohio Natives Named to 2006 United States National Junior Team

Ohio State's Tom Fritsche and Miami University's Nate Davis will compete at the 2006 International Ice Hockey Federation World J

Ohio Natives Tom Fritsche (Parma, Ohio) and Nate Davis (Rocky River, Ohio) were named to the 2006 U.S. National Junior Team announced on Monday. The 22-member squad will compete at the 2006 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship in British Columbia.

In addition, CBJ 2005 Draftee Kris Russell was one of 34 invited to Team Canada's selection camp from Dec. 11-16. Russell, who was Columbus' third pick, 67th overall in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft, has scored 8-16-24 in 27 games with Medicine Hat of the Western Hockey League.

Fritsche, whose older brother Dan plays for the Columbus Blue Jackets, is a sophomore at The Ohio State University and was a second-round draft pick (47th overall) of the Colorado Avalanche in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft.

The 5-11, 180-pound forward registered 11-34-45 his freshman season at OSU en route to being named the Inside College Hockey National Freshman of the Year. Fritsche has followed that season up posting 5-9-14 in 15 games this year for the Buckeyes.

A native of Rocky River, Ohio, Davis leads Miami in scoring this season with 13 points on six goals and seven assists, while leading the squad with a +12 rating. Earlier in the year, he recorded just the third natural hat trick in program history, when he scored three consecutive goals in Miami's 6-1 win over Bowling Green on Nov. 25.

Last season, Davis was selected in the fourth round of the 2005 NHL Entry by the Chicago Blackhawks after leading all Miami freshmen in scoring with 25 points on 14 goals and 11 assists. He tied for the NCAA lead with four shorthanded goals and earned Miami's Rookie of the Year Award.

The 2006 IIHF World Championship features athletes under the age of 20 on international teams representing the United States, Canada, Czech Republic, Finland, Latvia, Norway, Russia, Slovakia, Sweden and Switzerland. Team USA will gather in Seattle, Wash., on Dec. 18 before traveling to Victoria, British Columbia on Dec. 19. The United States plays two exhibition games before opening the tournament versus Norway on Dec. 26. Team USA is in a pool with Norway, Finland, Switzerland and Canada.

this is a huge accomplishment

The Fritsche family is quickly becoming a familiar name in NHL circles. Dan Fritsche was drafted 46th overall in the 2003 Entry Draft and has been up and down with the Columbus Blue Jackets. Younger brother Tom Fritsche is 20 and was drafted by the Colorado Avalanche 45th overall in the 2005 draft. Tom is a little smaller at 5-foot-11 and a little lighter at 183 pounds, but what he may not have in size he makes up in skill and desire.
In a few years, these brothers should be mainstays in the NHL, with Tom getting the nod as the top player in the family.
Tom, an Ohio State University winger is carving out his own path to the NHL. Last season he averaged more than a point-per-game in the CCHA, leading his team in points and assists as a freshman. But Tom isn't projected to be a scorer when he takes the next step up the hockey ladder. His play is reminiscent of Edmonton Oilers forward Michael Peca and versatility is his strength. During the 2006 World Junior Championships, Tom Fritsche wasn't a first-line player and wasn't among the tournament's leading scorers, but any coach would want him because of his leadership capabilities and hockey acumen.

In his first six games at the World Juniors, Fritsche had five points, a power-play goal and was a plus-1. Those are the kinds of numbers that you can expect from him.
To further illustrate his value in Team USA's only game against Canada Fritsche scored a goal when his team was down. He was on his team's energy line and his keen passing ability helped teammate Peter Mueller get the goal that tied the game up. Fritsche is a clutch player because he doesn't panic. He's an unselfish player who will shoot when he needs to but will pass it just as easily.
Fritsche is a player who is learning all the time. He gets it and watching him you can see him making adjustments and learning from his mistakes. Hard work has made good players better in the NHL and the Parma, Ohio native doesn't ever let up in any game.
Fritsche is a part of the new wave of terrific American players who will start to fill NHL rosters and Olympic squads down the road. He has had a history of winning to build on from the Four Nations Cup in 2002, where Team USA struck gold, and he will get another chance to lead his team to a gold medal at the 2007 World Junior Championships.
He was voted to the CCHA All-Rookie team in 2004 and he hasn't experienced a sophomore slump. If he continues to improve at his present pace, Fritsche could be in the NHL in two to three years. As the Avs continue to turn over their roster they will need players like Fritsche, who are willing to pay the price and put in the time to be a successful professional player.
Colorado traded it's first-round pick in the 2005 draft to Washington to get two second round picks, the 27th and 47th overall. They were likely watching the board and making sure they could snag a playmaker like Fritsche, so they traded down and kept an eye on him until he fell in their lap. It's those kinds of draft-day deals that can really help a franchise down the road. Keep an eye on this Fritsche because he will be playing in Denver before you know it.

Bad news for the Buckeyes
Ohio State's 2005-06 leading scorer Tom Fritsche may not be able to play at all this season. The junior forward has been hospitalized with a severe case of ulcerative colitis — an intestinal disease — and, in a best case scenario, will miss the start of the season.
"It's a tough pill to swallow," Buckeyes head coach John Markell said. "He's not in school right now, and certainly there may have to be a withdrawal from there. Our thoughts are with him."
Markell said that Fritsche's weight has dropped from 190 to about 145 pounds.

as mentioned earlier tommy is danny's younger brother. tommy was a second round pick. thoughts and prayers.

Former NE Ohio amateur hockey stars and longtime buddies will finally meet as pros Saturday

The Davis Familiy
Top, longtime friends Nate Davis of Rocky River, left, and Tom Fritsche of Parma played together for the U.S. developmental hockey team in Michigan in the late 1990s. Fritsche has moved on to play with the American Hockey League?s Lake Erie Monsters while Davis now skates for league rival the Rockford IceHogs, bottom.

The dream is to be linemates, or, if need be, opponents, in an NHL game anywhere. But Tom Fritsche and Nathan Davis -- two of the finest hockey talents to come out of Northeast Ohio in recent years -- gladly will settle for what awaits them Saturday night at The Q.

Fritsche's Lake Erie Monsters face Davis' Rockford IceHogs in an American Hockey League game. Fritsche grew up in Parma; Davis, in Rocky River. They have known each other since their days as teammates on elite teams during their middle-school years.

"I know a lot of our family and friends will be there, so it should be a lot of fun for all of us," Fritsche said.

Davis said: "My family members got their tickets early. I can't wait to hook up with 'Buzz.' He and I go way back, and I have a ton of respect for him."

Saturday will not be the first time Fritsche and Davis, each of whom is beginning his second full season as a professional, have played against each other in the AHL. It will, however, be the first time both are healthy for the encounter.

The Monsters and IceHogs played twice last season. In the first meeting, Feb. 20 at Rockford, Ill., Davis was sidelined because of lingering effects of a concussion. He then watched from the stands as Fritsche suffered a concussion. In the second meeting, April 1 at The Q, neither Davis (concussion, back) nor Fritsche (concussion) was available.

Whether Fritsche plays Saturday is the question. He was a "healthy scratch" in the season opener Oct. 3 at Rochester, N.Y. The Monsters play in Rochester again tonight. Davis played in Rockford's season opener.
