Connor Sabanosh extended his reached base streak to 15 games in win over Rockets

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State baseball team continued to take care of its home turf Tuesday evening with a 9-2 win over Toledo at Nick Swisher Field at Bill Davis Stadium. With the victory over the Rockets (8-16), the Buckeyes improve to 15-6 overall and 8-2 at home in 2015.
"I thought we got off to a slow start today but finished really strong," head coach Greg Beals said. "We got some big two-out hits and quality at bats late in the game. Those are big difference makers on the scoreboard. Jacob had a quality start and our bullpen really gained control of the game tonight. We have to come back out here tomorrow and bring our best against another in-state school."
The Ohio State offense scattered nine runs on 11 hits led by Connor Sabanosh and Craig Nennig, who each had two RBI and a run scored. Ronnie Dawson also had a pair of hits. Troy Montgomery, L Grant Davis and Aaron Gretz also scored a run and drove in a run in the contest, while Troy Kuhn homered vs. the Rockets.
Toledo's top hitter was an impact early on in the contest as AJ Montoya posted a two-out home run vs. OSU starting pitcher Jacob Niggemeyer in the top of the first to give the Rockets a 1-0 advantage.
Ohio State got a runner on base in the first two innings, but failed to score a run vs. Toledo starter Alex Wagner. But the Rocket lead wouldn't last much longer. A two-out, two-run double to left center by Connor Sabanosh in the bottom of the third plated a pair of runs to give Ohio State the 2-1 lead. Craig Nennig and Troy Montgomery walked vs. Wagner to set up the scoring play.

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State baseball team finished its 11-game homestand with a 9-4 win over Akron Wednesday night at Nick Swisher Field at Bill Davis Stadium. The Buckeyes conclude the home stretch with a 9-2 mark and improve to 16-6 overall in 2015.
"It was great for our offense to get several extra-base hits and stolen bases tonight," head coach Greg Beals said. "It wasn't an easy day to pitch with the wind blowing the way it was and Havird did a good job of getting us five innings before Kinker came in and really did a nice job out of the bullpen tonight. We need to continue this momentum this weekend at Rutgers."
The Akron bats took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second on four hits vs. Ohio State starter John Havird. But the Buckeyes evened the score at 2-2 quickly after RBI doubles by Nick Sergakis and Zach Ratcliff in the bottom half of the second against Akron starter Josh Lapiano.
The score remained tied until the bottom of the fifth when the Buckeyes jumped out to an 8-2 lead after a five-hit, six-run fifth inning. With the bases loaded Connor Sabanosh sent a sac fly to center field to give Ohio State the 3-2 lead. Pat Porter then doubled to left center to plate Troy Montgomery and Ratcliff. An RBI single by Kuhn scored Porter from third base before Ronnie Dawson crushed a two-run home run deep over the wall in right center to make it 8-2.
After the Zips plated a run in the sixth and seventh innings, respectively, Porter launched his fourth home run of the year with a solo shot over the right field wall to make it 9-4.
Havird improves to 3-0 in 2015, throwing 5.2 innings and allowing three runs on nine hits with a walk and four strikeouts. Seth Kinker relieved him and threw 1.1 innings on two hits, one run with two strikeouts. Michael Horejsei pitched a scoreless eighth with a strikeout, while Adam Niemeyer tossed a scoreless ninth with a strikeout.
The Buckeyes will next head for a three-game series at Rutgers Friday-Sunday at Bainton Field in Piscataway, N.J.

GAME NOTES

• Ohio State improves to 19-9 all-time vs. the Zips.
• With a walk in the bottom of the first, Troy Montgomery extended his reached base streak to 17 straight games (career high) and his hit streak to 14-consecutive games with two singles (career-high)
Zach Ratcliff made his seventh start at first base in 2015.
Ronnie Dawson and Pat Porter each collected their fourth home runs of the year.
