To link or not to link

What's your preference? Sometimes a thread with a good link is appealing, but usually my favorites are off the cuff.

If you chose link, how do you arrive at most of your linked threads. Do you come upon them by chance or do you surf the net to find something worth posting?

Off the cuff threads are always the best, but sometimes a good/interesting/funny linked story is good to get a conversation going.
