BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Terrell Owens exchanged words with head coach Andy Reid at a team meeting Wednesday and was asked to leave, according to news reports.

Owens then got his belongings and cleared out of Eagles training camp at Lehigh University, according to two television reports. He was expected to return to his home in Atlanta, ESPN's Sal Paolantonio reports.

Earlier Wednesday, he had missed practice for the fifth time in six days because of a left groin injury.

Owens worked out with the team's assistant trainer for about 20 minutes on a separate playing field from his teammates, catching balls from a machine and doing some light running. He did not speak to reporters or acknowledge the fans who chanted his name.

The All-Pro receiver sat out practices last Friday and Saturday. He returned Sunday for both the morning and afternoon sessions, but hasn't practiced since.

Owens is unhappy the Eagles have refused to redo his contract as he enters the second season of a seven-year, $48.97 million deal.

Last season, Owens had 77 receptions for 1,200 yards and a franchise-record 14 touchdowns receptions before severely injuring his ankle late in the season. He missed the final two regular-season games and the first two playoff games before returning for the Super Bowl, in which he had nine receptions for 122 yards.

When asked about Owens leaving camp, his agent Drew Rosenhaus said it was a matter between Owens and Andy Reid. Rosenhaus declined to talk about it further.

We all realize that the only guaranteed money in any NFL contract is the signing bonus. TO's mistake --and it was his own in the end not his agent's -- was that he he signed a contract WITHOUT a signing bonus. Now he wants to re-write the contract to get his "market share" of signing bonus money, which has - naturally - increased in his eyes on account of his hero with a limp performance in last year's Super Bowl. I'd feel remarkably sorry if with a gun held to his head he had signed for zero bonus money. He didn't do it that way, it was his own witting choice.
Wrong it may be that NFL contracts give little protection to players, other than that signing bonus. It might also be argued that Philly is a town without pity for not doing right by Owens after the Super Bowl - he did after all put his career on the line playig on that injury. One bad hit and its all over - no bonus money to cushion the blow.
What cannot be argued is that Owens and Owens alone has got himself in this fix by accepting that play for pay contract offered by the Eagles.

I have to believe the words exchanged were over his "injury"....many people have their doubts he is really injured. Owens is a guy who just doesn't get the team concept. He has bad mouthed his own team and players, accused one of his past quarterbacks of being gay. He has gotten into confrontations with his other head coaches, this is nothing new for this prima dona. He even bad mouthed Jerry Rice...:roll2:

His agent didn't do him any favors by going to the media and forcing the Eagles hand so to speak. Now with this new development it seems he has worn out his welcome with Phily. The question is wether Reid told him to leave or he left on his own, I have been hearing conflicting reports. If he was told to leave then Owens could find himself in a Keyshwan Johnson type of scenario, if he left on his own then who knows what Phily will do with him.

I can't stand the guy myself.

What a difference a year makes. Last year Eagles fans loved TO, Eagles fans/posters taunted Ravens fans over getting TO, and Andy Reid was promising to wear tights as part of a dare with TO.

I still find it ridiculous. Regardless of how good Terrell was, he didn't get them to the super bowl in the playoffs. The guy's value is extremely high, maybe higher than his contract, but I find it absurd to holdout for a new contract after making tons already. How long till the Browns figure out a way to add his mouth to their repetoire?

I can see him holding out forever if he were a free agent, that makes sense. Or if he signed for lesser pay b/c the eagles were worried about injuries or whatever beforehand. But he signed for a truckload of money to get them to the SB, something he didn't do.

Give McNabb another great possession WR (the almost all-pro type), and he'd do just as well. Donovan seemed to do well without him in the playoffs.
