Time for NFL Ref Reform?

Of course officials can make mistakes on the field. However, I trust that the NFL, after reviewing a game and coming out with a statement that the officiating is proper, is in a better position to make that statement than any of us. Do you disagree?
I believe they hold the position of saving face after virtually everyone in the country not wearing Black and Gold and some who are calling it the worst officiated Superbowl of all time.

I don't know about that one. Considering the fact that the NFL came out 2-3 days after the Steelers-Colts game and said that the ref made a mistake on the Polamalu call, the NFL doesn't seem to me to be above admitting mistakes when they are made.

Sorry. To refer to that abomination as "properly officiated" is either a discredit to the profession or simply stating that they had the proper number of referees for the game, and nothing more.

Enjoy your title Steeler fans.

I guess we just disagree here. Let me start by saying that I don't care who won the game, and I think a lot of the animosity toward the refs is driven primarily by people biased in their opinions b/c they wanted the Steelers to lose so badly. My point is that any game in which you want a team to win, it is difficult to overcome the feeling that the refs are making unfair calls against your team.

Due to the fact that I've realized I'm often biased, I've tried to end my critiques of the refs. Additionally, no matter how many games I've watched and no matter how well I think I know the rules, the refs are still professionals who are chosen experts at knowing the rules and applying the rules; hence, in my opinion, they're in a better position to make the correct call than I am as a fan. Finally, if the league later comes out and ratifies those refs' calls, I think it's even further support for the fact that either (1) I was biased or (2) they applied the rules better than I did.

Bottom line is, I think a lot of the people on this board complaining about the refs didn't want the Steelers to win the game. And even if they were totally unbiased, I'll take the NFL's critique of the refs' calls over some casual fan's any day, particularly when the NFL has shown a willingness to admit the mistakes of its refs in the past.

And still, I'm not one of those who wanted Pittsburgh to lose. I didn't care since I don't pay any attention to the NFL for its first 19 weeks. I'm not a Browns fan. I'm not a Bengals fan. I've only been to Pittsburgh once, Cincy three times and I've never been north of Mansfield in Ohio. I'm not from Ohio. I'm a Florida Native living in Ohio.

I can fairly assess that my opinions of the game are not based on being biased against Pittsburgh.

All that said. The officiating sucked.

OK. That's your opinion, and you're entitled to it. My opinion is that the officials on the field and the NFL know what the rules are and how to apply those rules better than any of us.

just not the NFL but, all the sports need a major upgrade.
It makes me sick when a ref is afraid to work an honest game for the visiting team might have a chance in equal calls or they are just so out-dated when a call should be called and just can't make the needed call . THATS THE WORST

Good move. Any farther north and you can smell TSUN.

Even if you throw out every other call that people are questioning just leaving the Hasselback call in shows there is no way that the game was completly officiated right. period. There is no way making a tackle can you make that call against Hassleback.

FYI--the NFL said the Super Bowl was properly officiated.

This could be the ultimate CYA response.

Who knows what the standards are in NBA basketball? IMO it ceased to be a game with any relevance to the rules as soon as Oscar Robertson entered, afraid that the Big O would be unstoppable they allowed "hand checking," then stopped calling traveling, palming the ball, charging, blocking...

Then half of baseball goes DH and 30 years later we still have two strike zones, two sets of umpires, no replay of some horrendous bad calls and two different line up rules.

The NFL seemed to me to be the only professional league that made the effort to have the rules keep up with the game. They rightly led the way with replay and overtime rules, but this past year seems to me to demonstrate that they have work to do... did he have possession? Well, he has to catch the ball and then make a football move... just what the hell is a football move? And the ground can't cause a fumble unless no one touched the man in which case the ground can cause a fumble... and if you go below the knees to make a tackle and take out a blocker in the process then it's an illegal tackle...

I agree with Mili that there's no proof that full time refs wouldn't make the same missed calls. I believe the NFL does a very thorough job of analysing films from the ref's point of view as well as the coache's, but the college man in the booth system (and overtime system) seemed to me to work better than the NFL's this last year and it may be that it starts with a better understanding of the rules and how to apply them.
