Tim Beck (HC Coastal Carolina)

It's really interesting our own guys in the media not seeing what we all saw in Beck. I get it. They assume Herman wants Beck for more than recruiting and he likely wasn't 100% or the problem here but go back to Nebraska and remove yourself emotionally from the situation and tell me this dude is a QB guru and can run a spread offense

What if I told you that Tom Herman was an offensive and QB wizard and that hiring Beck would stop the giant leak of talent from Texas to Ohio? That seems worth a coaching spot, especially with an extra one being added this spring.

Beck was always the whipping boy for a couple of reasons.

- He was the guy hired when Herman left, so naturally people correlate the two
- Ed Warriner built up a lot of good will from the job he did coaching the OL. He was phenomenal in that position
- Beck came with a soiled reputation from his time at Nebraska and the work he did with Martinez and Armstrong.

So, the deck was stacked against him. Since being on staff, however, the following has occurred.

- the 2015 offense fell well short of expectations despite having (arguably) the most available talent in school history.
- He was stripped of play-calling duties after failing to utilize the best RB tOSU has had in a generation against Sparty.
- QB play has fallen off a cliff since a VERY strong 2014 season, and bottomed out over the last month of 2016. This can be directly attributed to him as he was the "QB Coach."
- The 2015 and 2016 offenses never developed an identity. Play-calling and gameplanning had no cohesiveness.

Now, much of the above falls directly at Beck's feet, the QB play in particular. However, I think the fault might not be distributed evenly enough between Beck and Warriner. Warriner was the play-caller this year, and it's hard to call it even "adequate" most games. The offense gets an automatic upgrade with him moving on. It's impossible to argue that. But Warriner shoulders just as much blame, IMO. They both have their plusses...Beck as a recruiter, Warriner for his previous work on the OL. In retrospect, Warriner was clearly over promoted, and Beck never should have been hired.

Fortunately, we have a HC that isn't going to let a foul situation linger. He appears to be acting swiftly and decisively.

Well, I think it's pretty easy to not be entirely convinced it was Beck.. or Ed for that matter. What we do know is that Beck and Ed game planning and calling plays didn't work well here. With Wilson potentially in the fold and a seemingly strong QB coach coming on board, I suspect that a lot of the game planning and play calling will be removed from Ed's role... so, what ever it was, hopefully it's over now.

I think @LostLassie pointed out that we have what may be a fairly clean experiment to observe for the next couple of years. Two brilliant head coaches with Beck under them... we'll see where the second head coach goes with Beck on his staff.

It's a good move from a personnel standpoint by Herman. Very smart. It's odd that the reports indicate that he will implement Herman's system and call plays. Maybe that's just lip-service. But if it's true, Mensa is going way out on a limb here. Beck has no business being involved in the offense of any program with championship aspirations.

What doesn't add up for me is 0 points, 111 yards, 11 TFL's, and 1 carry for our RB in the 1st half. 35 ppg in 2015 for an offense that was dripping with NFL talent is also not computing in my brain

BUT if Tom wants him, he simply MUST be amazing!

I'm thinking that Beck is or could be an outstanding coach in the "right situation"; however, he just wasn't a "good fit" at Ohio State.

Extreme examples: both Nick Saban and Chip Kelly were outstanding college head coaches; however, both "bombed" in the NFL.

Maybe Beck will do alright at Texas.

Two things:

1. People make mistakes. Urban Meyer hired Tim Beck. Basically the same thing.

2. It depends on what you want to do on offense. The Warinner/Beck offense was supposed to add the power run game to a spread open passing game, only no one actually knew how to accomplish that. The fact that Urban, Warinner, and Beck decided on this and 2 of the 3 agreed to get it done I think Herman wants to be a spread option run team focused on play action passes, I think Urban wants that running game with a different approach to the pass game, that Day and Kevin Wilson would bring. I'm not making excuses for Beck and Warinner, but sometimes you should know what you know and know what you don't know.

I read this as "solid reputation" and started to wonder if you had too much eggnog over the holidays.

Oh, hell no.

I live in corn country and work with an army of husker fans. When he was hired, I was ribbed pretty relentlessly. All I had to lean on was "trust Urban." Turns out they were right, and Urban made a grave error. It happens. But, we're moving on now. And I'm much happier today than I was when I went to sleep last night.

Let's play a word game, Ryan Ginn. I'm going to swap some words around from your tweet, but keep the gist of it the same.

Just out of curiosity: Tim Beck critics Nebraska fans, how do you reconcile thinking he's bad with the fact that Tom Herman Urban Meyer is willing to hire him?
