Tim Beck (HC Coastal Carolina)

And Herman inherited a 6-7 team that averaged under 29 ppg, while Beck inherited the defending national champions who averaged almost 45 ppg. There's no real comparison here...
That was no ordinary 6-7 team. You can't ignore that the offense of that team was gutted by Tat -gate and sent off to a bowl game they had business playing in to satisfy TVs idea of how to grab an audience. Herman inherited an offense with a great deal of talent to include a soon to be Heisman candidate QB.

We still scored 52+ points four times and averaged over 37 ppg in Herman's first season as OC. And Herman inherited a 6-7 team that averaged under 29 ppg, while Beck inherited the defending national champions who averaged almost 45 ppg. There's no real comparison here...
Hey I'm not going to defend Beck. In fact I had to out the pitchfork down to even type. Just saying that the conservative play calling in the Sparty loss wasn't all his fault. We have literally seen it twice now to two different Sparty teams with 2 different OC. Urb has some copability in the loss and honestly admitted as much. When he takes over the reins he goes pretty conservative.

Last time I check, Braxton Miller played all of 2011 and started each game after the debacle against Duh U. Mike Adams sat out the first six games (in which the team went 3-3) and after his return team went 3-4...he still won the team's 2011 Jim Parker Award winner as the team's outstanding offensive lineman, so apparently his initial absence wasn't a real big deal. Boom Herron also sat out the first six games and still ended up with almost 700 yards rushing. The team still went 3-4 after the return of the suspended players (except for Pryor who had gone to the NFL). So the offense wasn't really "gutted" by Tat Gate. A lot of the offensive woes in the early season was due mainly to Joe "The Human T-Shirt Cannon" Bauserman.

And how many games did Terrell Pryor start? And Devier Posey, one or two? Cumulatively, that was one hell of a hole created and as we found out this year, continuity matters. Yes, Adams and Herron came back, but the disruption was spread throughout the season.

Maybe I'm crazy but you are proving Milli's point for him. Herman didn't run the table in 2012 with Pryor and Posey. He ran the table with the guys that stunk up the field the year before.

Posey was a solid WR but his loss was not "gutting". Almost every incoming OC will have personnel loses with which to contend...

Beck actually had very few losses to personnel to deal with, hence the reason why all of us are screaming..................................

Not really. Ohio State could have won the MSU game if Bauserman wan't put in the game, but Miami beat us pretty soundly, and we were leading Nebraska 27-6, and lost, which isn't really an offensive problem

I'm not trying to disprove Milli's point(s) regarding this season, I just don't like to see this year compared to 2011. I will remain grateful for the work that the staff, and especially Luke Finkle, put in that year to hold the team together and create a foundation that resulted in the success we currently enjoy. You just don't lose that amount of upper class talent and leadership, appoint an interim coach in April, turn the QB position over to Bauserman and a freshman, and continue the march.

I also don't like to see the blame laid completely at Beck's feet. If the problem was the conservative play calling of Beck, then it should have been obvious to Urban NLT game 2. That's why I keep saying that we don't know what went on in the coaching offices and we don't know what the real health issues were with this team - was JT ready to go in September? October?

I think it's worth a moment to ask how Urban felt about turning "his offense" over to a talented drop back passer. Round peg, square hole comes to mind.

I can't explain what I saw in the Michigan State game, but Urban certainly didn't have to stand on the sidelines and accept whatever it was Beck was calling.

Maybe - emphasis on the 'maybe'- what we all are missing is that this team was not as talented as we perceived, or the talents didn't fit together as well, or that this team didn't have the internal chemistry that 2002/3 and 2014/5 had.

No one is comparing this season with the 2011 season, but rather the change between 2011 and 2012 with the change between 2014 and 2015. Herman took essentially the same offense that had scored 28.9 ppg with one 40-point game (Akron) in 2011 and turned it to one that scored 37.2 ppg with four 50-point games in 2012. Beck took virtually the same offense that scored just under 45 ppg with six 50-point games and eleven 40-point games in 2014 to one that scored just 35 ppg with four 40-point games in 2015. Herman improved the offense by over eight ppg in his first year, while Beck caused the offense to degrade by almost a full ten points.
