A MAN OF BETRAYED JUSTICE

Most food photos appear much larger than they actually are. I'd argue this photo doesn't do it justice.

The Thurman Cafe is well known for incredible burgers (Welcome to the Thurman Cafe | The Thurman Cafe)

However, they're also infamous for outrageous wait times to be seated. (1 hr my first time, about 2 hrs the second).

Has anyone here called in an order? The website says you can do so, but the wait staff there isn't the greatest (other than the host). I tried calling a half-dozen times a few weeks ago, and they never answered.

Can you leave a message with your order? Are they reliable about filling that for the time you request to pick it up?

I'd like some feedback from others who have done this before driving across town for a burger order left with a unsatisfying answering machine.

Just want to make the disclaimer here that it has been almost 4 years since I lived/worked in C-bus.

My experience with take out from there is not that great. I worked in the Hilltop at ODOT when I lived there, and we used to have a division wide lunch where we would order take out/delivery each month. We ordered from Thurman's twice while I was there, and after the second time we all decided not to order take out from there again. Those things are meant to be eaten as soon as they are served.

Just my two cents (which may not mean much being that is from a few years ago) Thurman's is a GREAT place to go and eat (still my favorite place to get a burger, although I have found a few down here that are close) if you are willing to wait on a table (when I was up there, if you got there by 11:30am for lunch you beat the rush and got seated fairly quickly), but not a great take out place. JMHO.

Thanks.

Well in this case we'd eat it nearby at a park or something, but there's the issue of how long it sat before we arrived.

Oh, and we never called in the order. We always faxed it in with a time that we would pick up. That might work better than leaving a voice-mail message that may never reach the staff.

If you do try it, I hope you have a better experience than I had.

And just to throw this out there, Schmidt's was our all time favorite place for take out. God, I miss those places.

Buxfan4life...you worked for ODOT?

I'm interning with them right now. I'm officially out of District 6, but I do more work for Central Office than anything else.
Yep, 9+ years of my life ripped away from me at CO.

Not to get the thread off track, but what division are you in?

Just being honest here, FWIW, leaving that place was the best thing I ever did for my career.

Any other thoughts out there, elitists?

My thought:

I can't believe I've worked about a mile from there for 5.5 years and have never eaten there a single time. I really need to get in there for lunch one day. :tic:

If you're in that area regularly, Village Coney on Whittier is greatness.

EDIT - In other words....report back your experience so I know whether it's worth it to get in there.

Call in orders contribute to the wait time in my opinion. I went there once with my family last month and saw four or five huge (three or four full bags) take out orders leave the kitchen before we were served. I was pretty pissed at the time. So basically I would like to say screw all of you assholes leaving huge fucking pick up orders that back the kitchen up and make the people actually at the restaurant wait additional hours to get their food.

Good burgers though.

I like Thurmans quite a bit, but I've never tired take out. However, there's also another great burger joint right there - Easy Street Cafe. I've been there a couple times for lunch recently and have had nothing but great food - Burger and Fries - but they also have gyros which I'm told are also outstanding.
