Thoughts on Spurrior's return

well, the Gamecocks came out like gangbusters, but faded late, and really had to hang on at the end... i can't believe UCF has lost 16 in a row... they totally dominated the Line of Scrimmage for the entire second half... the Cocks threw for 330, but only rushed for 44 yards... that ain't gonna get it done in the SEC...

Darth Visor has his work cut out for him... the Cocks are gonna struggle this season...

anyone else watch it?

I just watched parts of the 1st half but agree 100%. UCF dominated the point of attack they were just too slow and unathletic out in space to close the deal. USC looks like they will struggle to run and struggle to stop the run..not a good combo in any elite conference but what does Superior care? He just wants to throw the ball around the field all day.

They can't just out athlete anyone in the SEC like they did to UCF tonight...Grad should have fun busting the balls of USC faithfull this year.

Looked good at times...and showed their youth most of the time.

The young guys will be good...but not this year.

Anyone notice Carlos Thomas...former Buckeye target?
good point on the youth factor... there is talent there, for sure, but inexperience showed against a very hungry UCF team... the Black Knights will be okay this year... they just gotta break the goose egg...

i wasn't even paying attention to Carlos Thomas... doh!

on another Buckeye related note, did anyone else notice that UCF's Offensive Coordinator is Tim Salem?

The freshman RB Mike Davis was also on the tOSU radar for a minute...but remember Fr RB/WR Bobby Wallace. I watched that kid do insane things on a football field for 2 years...he will be a star there.

I should have tackled him on the sideline when I had the chance...

It's going to be a long year for SC if they continue to play like that when they get into the SEC games... I wasn't impressed (UCF looked much better than I thought though... those kids never quit)....

SC will lose their fair share of games this year.

I never really liked Spurrier, I think he's a baby. However, he won his first game with SC even though it was over a chump team.

I think Terico (sp?) made the comment last night that the SEC better watch out. That may be true in the future but I don't believe SC is a team that's going to light up the SEC this season. Although they could be dangerous at the end of the year.

I think 4-7 is more like it. Even that may be generous. Grad is right, Bobby Wallace is very talented. If he gets a little larger and avoids injury, He'll be a good one. I don't know if anyone could gain any yards with that O line though!

Their defense was gimmicky and won't work against good teams (no down lineman should be an invitation to run the ball down their throat), the only reason it worked against UCF (AT TIMES) is that they were a much slower team. Standard Spurrier offense, but it won't be successful if they don't learn how to run the ball and protect the QB better...their defense really needs a lot of work defending the pass and stopping the run because they didn't do either particularly well against a not so great UCF team. O'Leary has his kids playing a lot better though the talent level isn't very high, in a couple of years they might be a threat to decent teams

My main thought is that UGA, UF and UT are going to have no mercy on a clearly overmatched USC team. You would think Holtz would have left more talent for 3 years worth of probation.

Post game analysis from Lee Corso was right on the money with this ...
Spurrier had a good game plan and play-calling early -- without which the slower more grinding game that UCF uses might have taken this thing out of the Gamecock's hands. It was the 2 early touches that gave USC their edge.

There were also some questionable choices made by O'Leary late in the game when UCF looked to close that gap. Went for 3 instead of all the marbles, still leaving two scores required, including a 2-point conversion - awfully tough with limited time on the clock. Plus, UCF's clock management was correctly criticized by Herbie.
