Thoughts on living in/near one's 'home town'

I actually grew up in Michigan, but consider Ohio my second home after attending OSU and living in Cleveland (west 'burbs) for 3.5 years after college. Since then I've moved to Iowa, back to Michigan, and now here to Delaware. All of my moves were good, career-wise, and I had some fun seeing different places and forging ahead on my own.

Now, however, I really find myself wanting to move back to Columbus. I've been here for almost 7 years and I'm kind of tired of the east coast. My wife grew up in the Akron area, so she's kind of interested in Ohio as well. I really liked Columbus when I was at OSU, and each time I go back it seems to have grown and improved even more.

As far as going back to my real hometown in Michigan, no chance. It's a nice city, but smaller than I want to live in now. And, my parents and most of my friends have moved away, so there aren't really any ties there.

One of the nice things about being a military brat is that I moved around a lot.

I've lived in about 8 different places and if you count my time in Iraq, 3 different countries including the US.

Being born in Stuttgart generally makes me think I probably won't return to where I was born unless on a visit

I know I won't return to Pennsylvania and while I might end up working in Columbus one day, I'm not exactly going to shut off any chances of moving elsewhere (I almost ended up staying in Tampa after my year in Iraq and I would have been ok with it)......

Hometown area is slowly dying. The Valley was a great place to grow up, but I don't know if I'd be happy there again.

If I moved back to Ohio, I would think it would be Columbus. Almost did a few years ago but had to take a few tests to transfer my certificate...procrastinated, missed a deadline, and figured I'd explore the option possibly later.

Dunno though.

I spent most of my youth in Columbus, was only really interested in going to Ohio State (which I did), and have no intention of ever not living here (at least for most of the year). I just think it's a great city to raise a family in, you get a lot more home for the money than other big metropolitan areas, there's a lot of different types of evironment within easy driving distance (Lake Erie, Hocking Hills, even Chicago is not a bad drive). All my family is spread around Ohio, and as a 4th-generation OSU grad my ties to the university are very strong. I love to travel and will always plan to see new places around the world, but Ohio will always be home for me.

Good thread F C.

I knew as soon as I finished high school I would never go back to Youngstown. It was a nice place to grow up, but does not offer a lot intellectually. I have been in Columbus for over 20 years now and it is a nice place to raise a family. As I get older and my kids finish school I can definitely see myself moving to another part of the country though.

Hmm ... Toledo, tOSU, and then moved out-of-state - that sounds familiar.

Family is the only reason I'd move back to Toledo, and since my wife's family is in Chicago, it's never been enough of a reason to move back. Plus, the job market in Chicago was always much better than in Toledo.

If I were going to move back to Ohio, it would have to be in Columbus, since it's great to be surrounded by Buckeye fans. As you know, Toledo has way too many folks rooting for TSUN.

If money wasn't a factor, and being close to the Buckeyes wasn't a factor, I'd spend my summers in Colorado and my winters in Arizona.

I loved the seven years I spent in Columbus and seriously considered staying there after I finished school. In fact, I think Cbus or Cincinnati are the only cities in OH I could see myself living. I guess after growing up in Toledo, I saw living in the more vibrant areas around campus in Columbus as a springboard to seeing what all was out there.

I'm afraid that I've been somewhat spoiled by the western sunshine. I think I'd suffer seasonal depression if I moved back to the midwest. My wife (who grew up in Indianapolis) feels the same way.

The only really nagging thing about living so far from where we grew up is the physical seperation from family. But that was a sacrifice that each of us willingly made when we chose to move away, and one that ocassionally gnaws at us.

A week or two spent with family around the holidays typically cures that though. :p

Thanks for the input, everyone. It's interesting to read what motivated us to get out of (or stay in/move back to) dodge.

We have a spare room...for now. :paranoid:

I was born and raised in a Military family, so we moved around some. When my Dad retired we moved back to his hometown (Coldwater) when I was a teenager. While I consider myself an Ohioan, I don't think I would like living in Mercer County. It's nice, clean, good schools, etc. But not much else going on.

I really loved Ohio State, but I went out and visited Arizona State and just knew I had to bounce. I came back and went out one weekend on campus and it was nasty out...like 34 degrees, freezing rain and wet... I knew I'd be much happier in nice weather.

I was spoiled from there on. A couple years after college I was off to South Beach for 4 years. If it wasn't for a great career opprotunity, I'd still be in nice weather. Now, I'm in Boston... it's o.k. I'm plotting my move to LA or back to Miami within the next couple years.

But, every summertime visit to Dublin, I feel like "I can live here"...but then from Oct-Apr I remember why not. My brother and I are the only ones in the family to have been born in Ohio. All of our family is in either New York, Florida or Boston. So I have no deep family roots there. Only my Mom still lives in the house I grew up in. She'll eventually move. I felt when I make big money some day, I'll buy something in Columbus as an investment. But, I'll never live there again. It doesn't make sense for me.

Stalker!

My father got out of the military when I was a year old. My parents didn't think I would like the lifestyle of always moving. I'm kinda bummed about that. I probably wouldn't have liked leaving friends, but I would have liked to experience new places.
