So, if you do the fair catch right, you get the ball where you catch it. But.. if you do it wrong... you ... get the ball where you catch it....

Great rule.

You're right is that either way the ball can't be advanced (unless the refs are asleep). :tongue2:

I think the only difference is that if the guy only waves his hand in one direction (thus giving an "invalid" fair catch signal), he can get hit without it being a penalty.

Ok. Then my guess is two.
It seems to me that a million years ago, Ohio State played Colorado or Washington or someone in a Kickoff Classic game on a Friday. 1984 or 1985, maybe?
I'm going to stick to me guess of two.
It'd have to have been a long time ago, because the Kickoff Classic was on Sundays through most of the 90s. The '95 opener against BC and the '99 opener against Miami were both Sunday night games. There was that odd Thursday night home opener against Wyoming in '97 in there too.

OK. Quick check of my Linux 'cal' program, the last January 1 to fall on a Friday was '99 ... no bowl that year. Prior to that would be Friday, January 1 of 1993 -- Ohio State lost to Georgia 14-21 in the Citrus Bowl.

So the only real penalty of giving an invalid fair catch signal happens when the other team is either stupid enough to smash somebody who gives a bad signal, or if they know the rule book letter for letter and can tell the difference.......and in that case the refs also have to know the rulebook letter for letter.

In 1985, the Colorado game was in Boulder on a Saturday (in '86 tOSU played Colorado on a Saturday in C-bus).

Here are the 'different' days for fairly recent early season games:

1986 - Wednesday, Aug 27 - Pigskin Classic - tOSU 10, Alabama 16
1994 - Monday, August 31 - Pigskin Classic - tOSU 34, Fresno St. 10
1995 - Sunday, August 27 - Kickoff Classic - tOSU 38, Boston College 6
1997 - Thursday, Aug 28 - Eddie Robinson Classic - tOSU 24, Wyoming 10
1999 - Sunday, August 29 - Kickoff Classic - tOSU 12, Miami 23

Here are Friday Bowl games for tOSU:

01-01-1971 - 16-27 loss to Stanford (Rose)
12-29-1978 - 15-17 loss to Clemson (Gator)
12-26-1980 - 19-31 loss to Penn State (Fiesta)
12-17-1982 - 47-17 win over BYU (Holiday)
01-01-1993 - 14-21 loss to Georgia (Citrus)
01-01-1999 - 24-14 win over Texas A&M (Sugar)
01-03-2003 - 31-24 win over Miami (Fiesta NC game)
01-02-2004 - 35-28 win over K. St. (Fiesta)

Here are other Friday games for tOSU:

09-07-1894 - 00-06 loss to Wittenburg
11-15-1895 - 08-06 win over Kentucky (tOSU lost to Centre of Ky. the next day)
10-23-1896 - 00-16 loss to Oberlin
10-30-1896 - 30-10 win over Case Tech
10-02-1959 - 00-17 loss at USC

So it looks like tOSU has a record of 6-7 on Friday games.

The only thing keeping that blown call from being as notorious as the Oklahoma-Oregon onside kick and the Steelers-Lions coin flip on Thanksgiving is the fact that this game is of absolutely zero consequence to the 2007 college football season.

not true... the computers factor in each team's record, the record of each team's opponents, and each opponents opponents...

Thank you.

This is exactly I wanted to know.

Anddddddd just as I say that, Boise State is up 7-0 lol

Doesn't appear that Fresno State can stop the run....considering they gave up 82 rushing yards on Boise State's 1st drive of the game! LOL
