I can't stop crying. I know there's time left, but I can't stop crying. No Ohio native has ever done more for Ohio State football and basketball in this era than this man. No matter how much I respect them, not Andy Geiger, not Jim Tressel, not Thad Matta.
I think I understand what depressed people feel like now. It's just so much to take in all at once. Gosh, I wish I could stop crying.
Martin to step down next fall
ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan athletic director Bill Martin will retire effective Sept. 4, 2010, the school announced Wednesday.
Martin, a former president of the United States Sailing Association, became director of athletics at Michigan in 2000, at first on an interim basis replacing Tom Goss. His retirement was announced in a letter to university President Mary Sue Coleman and then at a meeting with athletics staff, the university said.
Michigan's sports coaches said they would be sorry to see Martin leave and credited him for improving the university's intercollegiate athletics facilities.
"What he's done facility-wise and fiscally for the department has been amazing. It's going to be sad to see him go," said football coach Rich Rodriguez, whom Martin hired. "I certainly appreciate everything he's done for us since I've been here."
"For nearly a decade, Bill has shown truly outstanding leadership as Athletic Director at the University of Michigan," Coleman said in a statement. "He has not only done a superb job of attracting top coaches for the full range of Michigan sports, but he has also assembled an excellent management team to oversee all aspects of athletics operations."
Coleman said Martin will remain director until a successor is chosen, then will remain a special adviser to her until retiring from the university in September.
He graduated in 1962 from Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio, and did graduate work at the University of Stockholm in Sweden and the University of Michigan. He and his wife, Sally, live in Ann Arbor and have two sons and three grandchildren.

Apparently, they are buying him a new imported chair for his retirement, so he can remember the race downhill.
