Matt Emmons of Fairbanks, Alaska, had a commanding lead in the 50-meter three-position rifle final and needed only to hit near the bull's-eye on his last shot to take the gold. But he fired at the target in the next lane instead of his, a rare mistake in elite competition.

Emmons was awarded a score of zero and dropped into eighth place. Jia Zhanbo of China took the gold.
