Illicit photos taken by tourists who secretly climbed wonder of the world at night

These photographs capture the views from the top of one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

A group of Russian tourists waited until official visiting hours were over at Egypt's famous Giza Necropolis, before scaling the enormous Great Pyramid as the sun began to set.

The Russians managed to escape the attention of security guards at the ancient site, allowing photographer Vitaliy Raskalov to snap pictures of the surrounding desert and the majestic Sphinx from the top of the 455ft structure.

Re: The Russians managed to escape the attention of security guards at the ancient site

I find that real interesting, I was there in 2010 and the security people (i.e. local police, National Tourist and Antiquity police, and the Egyptian Army) were everywhere at all the tourist sites all over the country. The only way you got into a restricted (or roped off) area was to bribe a guard and a couple times I even encountered the guard soliciting a bride to allow you to do it. We had a Tourist and Antiquity policeman (with an automatic weapon) accompany us in the van/bus all over the country. My guess is that American tourists traveling in Egypt now are not nearly as safe (i.e. protected) as they were in 2010.

In case you are wondering the pyramid was posted for "No Climbing":

We were there in 2005 and security was pretty relaxed. The most invasive thing that happened to us were the dudes with all the camels trying to get you to sit on them for pictures.
Did you sit on a dude with a camel? Or did the camel take the picture? :p

Yep, baksheesh was one of the first Arabic words I learned.

 I wondered if I worded that strangely. I guess I found my answer. But to answer your question, I sat on the camel. I'll have to dig it up because it's pretty funny. They put a turban on me and everything.

hmmmmmmm, maybe I shouldn't post it. The headline in the Dispatch tomorrow would be "Local Wolverine fan admits to being terrorist."
