The Underwood Brothers

EJ can't work out with the team for now, so he went to Arizona to work out with a great personal trainer that is a family friend. He is taking classes down there at a CC plus a class online, so he should be academically eligible come fall barring any big changes.

EJ and Brandon were both invited to the Deion Sanders' CB camp in this upcoming summer. EJ is much better at man to man, and needs work on his zone coverage.

Brandon and EJ should make it back for the Aug 9th practice. Brandon separated his shoulder in the Big 33 game in 2004, and he has not been 100% until very recently.

According to dad, Brandon is up to 6-3, 190 (listed 6-2, 170) and EJ is 6-1, 190 (listed 175).

According to nevada on BN $ board, Lane/Welch have taken great strides, the coaches are high on Everett, and eager to see O'Neal in the fall. He suggests that the cupboard is full regardless of whether they come back.

But I agree, it would be extremely full if they made it back. We could lose a couple of corners to injury and still have a very good lineup.

I agree with you Taosman!! I thought EJ just hit a slump at the end of the year, because I thought he played pretty damn good in the beginning. Infact I thought he was better than Yobouty in the beginning. However now Yobouty is clearly better and has so much confidence! I hope both Underwoods can get back and make a run for a starting position.

One thing I forgot to include in my summary was that there were a lot of things gonig on in the underwood boys' lives, including their father being diagnosed with cancer (since then he has been re-diagnosed to be cancer free).

Thanks for the summary guys.

Like everybody, I hope EJ can make it back and have a breakout year. sounds like he has put on some weight (up tp 190)

I think in order for him to really contribute though, he better learn his zone assignments, because at least under the past regime...bump-and-run type man coverage was rarley used

It sounds like welch is a pleasent surprise at CB. Coming out of HS i never thought he was coverage material, in the Ohio North-South game ( and I thing big 33) he was getting consistently beat in coverage.

He has always had the reputation a a great hitter though.

Sometimes it just takes a while to catch on...

Kinda suprised about Welch too. Here is the link to the thread during the big 33 game. Someone said he was in good position, but just got outjumped..Maybe he had a problem playing the ball like EJ Underwood has in the past?

Anyway good news on the Underwoods.

Check this article out, perhaps E.J. wouldn't have to improve his zone coverage skills after all.

Zone coverage and schemes also make it harder to stop the run, not just because of the assignment the DB’s have, but because they are spread out on the field. What this means is that DB’s are rarely playing close enough to the line of scrimmage to help with run support, meaning that if a running back or quarterback takes the ball past the line of scrimmage they have a little bit more room to run around before being tackled or reaching the end zone.
Hmmm...Cover 3 brings the SS closer to the LOS and gives him freedom to come up hard on run support. Cover 2 keeps CBs in the flats and also allows them to help out on edge run support. Both are Zone coverages...the author also fails to realize that many formations will dictate possible coverages. You cannot play strictly Man...unless you have one tenacious pass rush.

Not a very good display of X & O knowledge IMHO....
