Squirrel Appreciation Day

squirrel2.jpg

When : Always January 21st
Squirrel Appreciation Day is an opportunity to enjoy and appreciate your tree climbing, nut gathering neighborhood squirrels. It's held in mid-winter when food sources are scarce for squirrels and other wildlife. Sure, squirrels spent all fall gathering and "squirreling " away food. But, their supplies may not be enough. And, the variety of food is limited. So, give them an extra special treat today to supplement their winter diets.

How can you celebrate National Squirrel Appreciation Day?

1. Feed them. All you need is a pine cone and some peanut butter. Spread the peanut butter on the pine cone, hang it from a tree, and your work is done. You could also carry some nuts or seeds in your pocket, just in case you come face to face with one.
2. Educate yourself. Look at that squirrel as more than a just a pest. According to the National Wildlife Federation, when a squirrel hides its food, it pretends to bury it a few times before choosing a final hiding spot. And did you know there are more than 300 different species of squirrel?
3. Let them be. If you're a squirrel hater, fight the urge to chase one, throw things at it, etc. Give them their one day of peace.
4. Spread the word. If more people know, more squirrels will feel appreciated.
5. Watch squirrel videos. YouTube is full of videos that will put you in a squirrely mood. Here's a fascinating one of ground squirrels using their bushy tails to fend off a cobra in Africa:

One of my coworkers called in this morning with furnace problem. He said his furance was running squirrely. Turns out a squirrel got inside the flue duct trying to get warm and died sucking exhaust fumes. The repairman pulled out a very large squirrel out in a bucket. I commented that he should have used more nuts if he wanted to keep the "squirrel cage" motor running longer to save energy! Engineering humor... True story though.

6. Shoot them and eat them. Whether pellet gun, .177 or .22, knock those fluffy tail rats out of the tree and into your crock pot.

Squirrel zooms past plate during Oswalt pitch

Things got a little hairy for Roy Oswalt and the Phillies in the fifth inning of Wednesday's Game 4 of the National League Division Series, which the Cardinals won, 5-3, to force a Game 5 on Friday.
A squirrel, the same kind of critter who dashed across the field in Tuesday's game, made its return in the fifth inning, racing from the first-base dugout and running past home plate while Oswalt delivered a pitch to second baseman Skip Schumaker.
