I was watching a little of the '96 OSU /ND game and enjoying the whooping we put on them. My wife was actually asking ?'s about those teams and the bowl appearance. She asked who was in the National Championship game that year? I explained the obvious that it didn't exist..............

It got me thinking of where would the teams in 2005 ended up if we still had the old system. Its harder to do because of all the re-alignment of the conferences and teams moving here and there.. ...

Anyone help out?

Rose
USC vs. PSU

Orange
Texas vs. ND ???????
I can't remember but I thought the Big 12 always had a tie in to the Orange. But can't seem to remember Texas ever playing there. Colorado, Nebraska and ND, yes, but?????????

Sugar
Georgia vs. FSU ????????????
Again I seem to think the SEC had a tie in here, but not sure about the ACC. I distinctly remember Alambama whooping the Hurricanes here one year, but the rest is a little hazy.

Fiesta
?????????????????

More Importantly where would tOSU go? Florida somewhere, Citrus Bowl maybe??

For many more years than it was the B12, it was the B8 Conference & the Southwest Conferences. The B8 had the tie-in to the Orange I believe. That's why Texas, who was in the SW wouldn't have played there....they haven't won the conference since the merger.

Did the Southwest have a tie to the Cotton or Sugar Bowl?

The SWC was the home team in the Cotton Bowl

The Big 8 was the home team in the Orange

The SEC was the home team in the Sugar

The Fiesta bowl started as a tie in game for the WAC. That ended in 78 when Arizona & Arizona St. joined the PAC 10. The Fiesta bowl grew in prominence because Penn St., Miami & ND were all independents that did not have conference tie ins elsewhere.

Ohio State would have played in the Citrus Bowl, later named Capital One Citrus Bowl, now named Capital One Bowl. The Big Ten has been tied to the Citrus Bowl since at least the early '90's. With no BCS game to "steal" Ohio State from the Citrus Bowl, I think Ohio State's only choice would have been the Citrus Bowl. (Or no bowl, at all.)
