Lady Bucks split with Kent State

COLUMBUS, Ohio - After dropping the opening game of Wednesday's doubleheader to Kent State, Ohio State battled back and secured a walk-off win in the nightcap to complete the split and improved its overall record to 31-15-1. Kent State is 33-19.

THE SHORT STORY
Kent State struck early with a grand slam in the first game and thwarted a late Ohio State rally to earn a 6-3 victory in the first game before the Buckeyes walked off with a win in the second game - literally. Emily Clark's bases loaded two-out walk completed a two-run comeback in the bottom of the seventh and gave the Buckeyes a 4-3 triumph.

Buckeyes lose 2 of 3 to Michigan State

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Michigan State scored five times in the top of the seventh and fended off a late rally by Ohio State in the bottom half of the inning to hand the Buckeyes a heartbreaking 9-7 loss in front of a near capacity crowd at Buckeye Field on Sunday. With the setback, Ohio State finishes the regular season 32-17-1, 13-9-1 in the Big Ten.

THE SHORT STORY
Cammi Prantl's two-run double - part of a four-hit effort for the senior and made her the all-time hits leader in school history - gave Ohio State a 6-4 lead in the bottom of the sixth, but five unearned Spartan runs came across the plate in the top of the seventh and Michigan State held on from there to take two out of three in the series.

OLUMBUS, Ohio -- A 33-win season has earned the Ohio State softball team an at-large berth into the NCAA Tournament. The Buckeyes were one of 32 teams to secure a bid when the 64-team field was announced live on ESPNU Sunday night.

Ohio State (33-18-1) is headed to the Knoxville Regional where it will face Arizona (36-19) on Friday at 4:30 p.m. (ESPNU). The other two teams in the regional are the host Volunteers (41-14) and Marist (45-11), champions of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. The Vols and Red Foxes meet at 7 p.m. on Friday.

The Buckeyes earned their at-large bid on the strength of a regular season that saw them win nine games against teams ranked in the Top 75 of the RPI with six of those victories coming either on the road or at neutral sites. From Feb. 27 through March 19, the Buckeyes played seven of their 10 games vs. teams that were in last year's NCAA Tournament and went 4-3, with wins over Arizona State, San Diego State and Fresno State. For five straight weeks, Ohio State was ranked in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 poll.

This will be Ohio State's eighth NCAA Tournament appearance and first since 2010. For head coach Kelly Kovach Schoenly, it will mark her third regional appearance -- she previously took Miami (Ohio) to the NCAA Tournament in 2009 and 2012.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Junior shortstop Lilli Piper has been named the Big Ten Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday.

Piper hit .500 (5-for-10) over the weekend as the Buckeyes bested Texas and Wichita State (twice) to go 3-0 at the Texas Invitational. She connected on two home runs – including a walk-off homer in the first meeting with Wichita State on Friday – and drove in five runs. Piper tallied five hits, seven runs, a team-high 14 total bases and a 1.400 slugging percentage.

To open the tournament, Piper helped the Buckeyes erase a 3-0 deficit on their way to the fourth walk-off triumph of 2018. Staring down two outs in the bottom of the seventh, she smacked a two-run walk-off homer over the left field wall to lead the team to a 4-3 victory over the Shockers. It was her second walk-off hit of the season.

Piper launched her second home run in less than twenty-four hours in Ohio State’s 8-5 comeback win over Texas on Saturday. She was even more impressive in the rematch with Wichita State as she went 3-for-3 with three runs and a RBI. The Norton, Ohio native was just shy of hitting for the cycle with a single, double and triple in the 9-0 five-inning shutout.
