The Number 1 Party School Is...

The Nation's No. 1 Party College Is...
...the State University of New York at Albany.

That's the word from the Princeton Review's annual college rankings based on a 70-question survey completed by 110,000 students on campuses nationwide. And while all college administrators vie to have their school be considered the one with the best undergraduate academic experience--top honors go to the University of Chicago this year--or the best academic bargain for your tuition buck--that would be New College of Florida among public schools and William Jewell College among private schools--none of them want the title of No. 1 party school. That designation is made based on the answers to questions about the amount of alcohol and drug consumption, the amount of time students spend studying, and the popularity of fraternities and sororities.

This is the ninth time that SUNY at Albany has made the list of party schools. Last year it was No. 14; in 1998, it was No. 1. The University of Colorado at Boulder ranked as the No. 1 party school last year.

Conscientious grown-ups, namely university presidents, medical experts, and parents who pay hefty tuition bills to these schools, deride this particular ranking as irresponsible and unscientific. Meanwhile, students cheer when their school is recognized as a party-hearty place to be.

The top 10 party schools for 2005 are:

SUNY at Albany

Washington and Lee University

University of Wisconsin-Madison

West Virginia University

Ohio University-Athens

Florida State University

University of Texas at Austin

University of Georgia

University of Colorado, Boulder

University of Mississippi
On the opposite end of this scale are the top 10 stone-cold sober schools:

Brigham Young University

Wheaton College

United States Naval Academy

Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering

Webb Institute

United States Coast Guard Academy

Calvin College

United States Air Force

Grove City College

Wesleyan College
No. 1 schools in other categories you won't find on most lists:

Best Professors: Marlboro College
Toughest College to Get Into: Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Students Never Stop Studying: California Institute of Technology
Students Most Satisfied With Financial Aid: Claremont McKenna College
Most Beautiful Campus: Wagner College
Dorms Like Palaces: Pepperdine University
Dorms Like Dungeons: University of Oregon
Best Campus Food: Wheaton College
Biggest Fraternity and Sorority Scene: DePauw University
Happiest Students: Pomona College
Most Religious Students: Brigham Young University
Campus Race/Class Relations Friendliest: McGill University
Gay Community Most Accepted: Eugene Lang College
Students Lean Most to the Right (Politically): Texas A&M University
Students Lean Most to the Left: Warren Wilson College
Students Most Supportive of College's Sports Teams: University of Notre Dame
Worst Football Stadium: The Pig House, Ann Arbor scUM.

The complete listing is in "The Best 357 Colleges: 2005 Edition," which also has two-page profiles on each college with information on academics, student body, campus life, admission, and financial aid.

* OK, I added that one, but it's still true.

It's about time my Bobcats got back on that list

These three schools seem to make the list each year as well:

University of Wisconsin-Madison

Florida State University

University of Colorado, Boulder

I'm confused...

Athens is crazy. (My liver has two straight years worth of Scars to prove it)

Madison- Is Athens, only on a 4 times bigger scale.... (Just a quick suggestion... do not wake up in the Tri-Delt house on Parents weekend on a Sunday Morning-- It tends to complicate things...)

Colorado- Never Been there... but ahve hung with some Colorado kids long enough to see that they were conditioned in such a way that only a truly hardcore partying environment can imbue.

but this one Confuses me-

Florida State?

What?

My Step Brother went to FSU- One word about that kid. Pussy.

Didn't Jay Mohr once say, "I have no idea how Sebastian Janikowski gets in trouble there, the last time I was in Talahassee I had to turn gay just to have a good time." Or something to that effect.

I think this is the Florida "Speed Myth" crossed over to partying.

As an old road whore I have had the chance to see many if not most of these places and at least spend a weekend checking things out.

To me FL State has some good and bad things about it.

The good are that it is a teachers college and there a lot of fine young ladies that attend college. It is in FL which gets a party reputation by default.

The bad thing is that while in Florida it is no where near a beach. I also know that much of the partying is centered around the sororities and fraternities.

It has been awhile but I never had a hard time finding a good time at FSU.

A funny thing about Colorado is that the girls dress like they are in Florida during the summer. They are in some of the best physical condition I have ever seen. The exact opposite of Wisconsin.

Nola-

I'll have to take your word for it... If you say it more than just hype... Cool.

Mostly I just wanted to get a dig in on FSU.

I am no fan of FSU.
They are some arrogant SOB's.
Their fight song makes me sick.
My sister in law went there for grad school.
She did not like it but she was comparing it to Tulane and NOLA.
I do not believe she had the same intentions as I did either.:)

Just thought I would tell you what I know.

Also a lot of the guys that graduate from there go on to law school.

Now is that good or bad?

Sorry Rugby.:wink2:

I am with you on the babes.

The first couple of years I was in New Orleans I was trying hard to get to Austin. It did not work out.

I also remember being aware that many of these kids were very well off financially.

Daddy's money?

No worries. We had one here as a law clerk for the summer. I was all set for him to be a dick, but he turned out ok.

The thing that cracks me up the most is people who pay out-of-state tuition to go to FSU. UF I could see, maybe, but FSU? You might as well pay in-state at a junior college and then scalp some tix to the FSU games. You'd come out a little ahead on the deal and your degree would be worth just as much.

The person who wrote this poll has never been to Calvin College... it definitely has a lot of parties for being a private, Christian school. Its no party school, but its definitely one of the more liberal ones out there and there's no way its one of the 10 most sober schools.
