The Next Retired Number

Wouldn't it be great if the next retired number banner to be placed on the front of C deck consisted of five interlocked circles and the name Owens? Recalling that Owens worked out and competed inside the same stadium, on the same hallowed ground as the football players, seems to me to qualify his name being placed there.

It still gives me a kick when his name comes up again as the current Olympics are talked about.

I know there is that "Nat'l player of the year" stipulation (is that true?), but I think Orlando Pace should be considered... the guy redefined the OT position, and was one of the best Buckeyes ever.

Heisman winner, with the exception being Chic Harley, who played before the Heisman award was given out, though some argued if it had been awarded, he'd probably have won it three times.

The problem with honoring Pace is that it opens a slippery slope. Where does it end? If you honor Pace, then surely you have to get Hicks up there too, right? Bill Willis? Jim Parker? And Once you add them, don't you need to honor Spielman? And once he's up there, surely Laurinaitis qualifies (he'll have more awards), but that's not really fair, because many think Hawk was better, so lets add him too. What about the secondary? Jack Tatum should be up there, or how about Mike Doss? Nugent? Skladany?

As far as football players are concerned, Ohio State has had too many talented players to allow for such an arbitrary criteria. That's what the OSU Hall of Fame is for.

that is true... yet Bill Willis is retired

... and Pace finished 4th in the heisman (as an OL!), how close were any of those guys?

I agree wih you; however, they just retired #99 (Bill Willis).

I agree Smith will be next (Heisman), but I don't think all of those guys listed were as dominant in their respective positions while at OSU... Pace isn't just one of the greatest Buckeyes of all time, he was one of the greatest college offensive linemen of all time.

I'm for Owens having a place on the ring of honor, though I would not put it with the football players, for continuity's sake. Considering he has the track and field stadium named for him, I don't think he's being slighted at all, but he should have some sort of memorial in the 'Shoe, if he doesn't already. Plus, I don't think he really had a number to retire. I would think the next player to actually have his number retired will be Troy Smith. He fits all the criteria, it's only a matter of when they honor him. Bill Willis' inclusion raises some questions about what it takes to be inducted. I have no problem with Willis being included, but I would prefer that the ring be limited to Heisman winners in the future. If they add too many more players, it will detract from the accomplishments of the original inductees.

The triangular-looking monument in front of Ohio Stadium is the Jesse Owens Memorial.

Not for me... if everybody whose name and jersey number is up there was there necessarily/exclusively because they won the heisman trophy, then they'd just change the title of the thing to "OSU Heisman Trophy winners".

Winning a Heisman is ONE way of getting your name on the list for consideration. There are many other factors which, in a context other than sheer/recognized athletic sumpremacy, can make an individual's memory worthy of being enshrined in the 'Shoe.

This isn't pointed at you directly general, but imo, there shouldn't be any questions about why #99 is up there. If anybody has them, they need to reflect more deeply on the reasons behind Gene Smith calling Bill Willis "the Ultimate Buckeye" and saying that retiring his jersey "is a way to salute not just the Willis family, but the Buckeye program overall."
