The Loss Of Helmet Rule

I'd rather you make the tackle and give up 15 yards than have the guy break one and score. When Jamie Woods helmet came off the blocker should of released him, instead he took Jamie to the ground which should of been a penalty and resulted in offsetting penalties since Woods got up and tried to still make the tackle.

Yeah, for sure. Saw the same and wondered myself.

What happens if a RB collides with a defensive player and his (rb's) helmet pops off, but he's still on his feet? (I remember this happening to Mike Alstott on more than one occassion.) Does he have to take a knee or just drop the ball? Or finish the play, knowing he's going to get a 15 yard penalty?

Not trying to be a smart ass, just asking the question.

The play is blown dead when the ball carrier loses his helmet.

I don't have as big of a problem with the helmet rule. If players were wearing properly sized, properly strapped helmets they wouldn't be falling off like they do. I once had a guy jump on my back and try to rip my helmet off and it wouldn't come off so in most of these cases I'd bet they aren't doing something right. If a guy gets hit like Kurt Coleman yesterday and his helmet comes off it might be best to take him out for a play to make sure he is good to go.

The onside kick rule will kill any chance of making a comeback. Without the one hop onside kick there is pretty much 0 chance of getting an onside kick when the defense knows it's coming. Someone is going to have to come up with a new way to kick an onside kick.

Totally agree here. If the players actually strapped up their helmets they wouldn't be coming off after every play. These new rules are intended to get the players to actually strap up the helmet like they are intended to be used to help prevent concussions. Because it would be interesting if they have tests on whether a helmet that is not strapped up correctly has a greater chance of causing concussions.

That didn't help a PSU RB (I think his name was Day) against Ohio. He was in on a play and his helmet popped off and instantly got hit in the head and started bleeding. No penalty though since it was such a bang bang play and no way the defender could have not hit him.

The prevalence of extremely long hair among players is also a factor.

This is another dumb rule, just not as game effecting as the "Loss of Helmet" rule. Frequency of penalty calls.

The loss of helmet rule isn't a frequent penalty unless the guy keeps playing after he loses it. It doesn't have to be a penalty at all.

The onside fair catch after one bounce makes onside kicks pretty useless, altogether. That keep can be very game effecting.

Did anyone see Meatchicken's Ryan rip the helmet off of the Air Force QB??? - No penalty called but damn obvious.

Ryan is a dick, a true Michigan Man. I look forward to him getting blown up by Boren.

Yeah, me and a couple of friends stuck around the local Anchorage sports bar Saturday morning to watch the AF-scUM game after the Bucks won.

When that play happened and we were talking about it (a bit loudly) we got comments about how we were only saying it because we are a rival team. They couldn't even stand up for their player so they attacked us. lol.

God I hate that team up north.

(break, break)

As far as the helmet rule is concerned. So far the rule is a good idea just bad enforcement. It should be up to the ref in how to put the rule into play. Its very difficult to make this black an white.

Yes, they totally missed the guy spearing him to the ground when his helmet was off. Off setting penalties and on with the game....

Ding, ding. We have a winner.

It's definitely a factor but I don't think it's the primary culprit.

I think the main issue is improper helmet fitment.

When I played the first couple of days after having your helmet first fitted your head felt like it was being squeezed in a vice because it took time for the padding to mold itself around your melon. Even after the breaking in period it was never easy to pull your helmet off.

I'm guessing that modern padding might also have something to do with the change as it has more 'give' than the old closed cell foam & early air bags (which were just coming into fashion in my day).

It could be the new style helmets fit a lot different. But, players are admitting after the fact to pulling helmets off to get guys out for a play. Refs seem afraid to call pulling helmets off penalty for some reason. Maybe they think the rule is a slippery slope of player suspensions and game changing calls?
