Eye to the future, honoring the past
Hey guys...as you well know, I'm a Husker fan that loves posting on here.
Every year, I do this in honor of "The Game." So here we go...
(ahem, clears throat to sound like John Facienda)....
"The Game."
A day steeped deep in tradition, honor, sacrifice, and loyalty. Two of the traditional all time greats don their helmets on Saturday in the last regular season game of the year.
Never mind the record.
Never mind the stakes.
Never mind what else is going on in the rest of college football.
This game signifies the reason why young men come to these schools to play. They're ready to run through a brick wall at 110 miles an hour, and if that doesn't get it done on the first series, they're prepared to run into another brick wall at 120.
The pageantry....the tradition....THIS is what college football is all about.
These two combatants have played this game 111 times.
Throughout all of the grandiosity that is today's corporate, money-hungry, greed filled football.....very few games elevate themselves to the rich, storied tradition that makes college football the greatest sport known to man.
"The Iron Bowl"
"The World Greatest Cocktail Party"
"The Red River Shootout"
"The Holy War"
"The Backyard Brawl"
These are games that have stood the test of time. When you mention these games, people can say, "I know where I was when..."
They can say, "I remember when this happened during...."
Not many games like these are left. As a Husker fan, I sadly watched as Texas eliminated the Nebraska/Oklahoma rivalry.
Rivalry games are games where record means nothing. Everything has been saved for this final showdown.
No quarter asked, none given.
It's almost time....
