MARK SNYDER: U-M's defense not to blame

Wells' long TD run, no offense, the difference

November 18, 2007
BY MARK SNYDER
FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER
A year ago, Michigan coach Lloyd Carr lamented how three big plays by Ohio State scorched his defense, costing his team a trip to the national title game.
But when OSU tailback Chris Wells ripped off a 62-yard touchdown run in Saturday's 14-3 loss to Ohio State, Carr considered that big play a blip.
When you have so many larger problems, like an offense that had recorded only six first downs, the defense shined by comparison.

Seniors, Carr go out with a soft whimper
Another defeat at hands of Buckeyes almost unbearable
COMMENTARY BY MIKE LOPRESTI | GANNETT NEWS SERVICE

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Lloyd Carr did not go riding into the sunset. No sun here Saturday, which was just as well, because the low gray sky matched the mood of Michigan. Pain from a day like this lasts forever. On the unstable landscape of college football 2007, Ohio State's 14-3 win means the Buckeyes are still in the national championship hunt. What it means here is an agonizing, excruciating, unbearable goodbye.
There go the Wolverine seniors. Stars Chad Henne and Mike Hart, who turned down the NFL to return to Ann Arbor for something far different. They and their classmates will leave college without ever beating Ohio State, and it is hard to imagine a more searing disappointing for a Michigan football player.
"Not the way you want to end things," said linebacker Chris
Graham.
"We've got no bragging rights. We had a chance to win the championship here and didn't," safety Jamar Adams said.

Bucks rekindle days of Hayes
Wells, OSU grind out old-school win vs. Mich.
BY JOHN ERARDI | [email protected]

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - If you play football long enough at Ohio State University, you will find yourself wondering what it must have been like playing when the legendary Woody Hayes was coach.
The Buckeyes got their answer Saturday on a wet, cold day here before a crowd of 111,941 in a 14-3 grind-it-out victory over Michigan, in which Chris "Beanie" Wells rushed for 222 yards on 39 carries.
The Wolverines rushed for only 15 net yards (Michael Hart had just 44) and couldn't get their passing attack going either (76 yards) because of a slippery ball.
"Today we got a taste of Coach Hayes' football - two passes in the second half," said Ohio State fullback Dionte Johnson, who came to the postgame press conference Saturday with a rose sticking out from underneath his hat proclaiming OSU "Big Ten Champions."

Another loss to Ohio State Buckeyes leaves Michigan Wolverines seniors feeling empty

Sunday, November 18, 2007 Jodie Valade
Plain Dealer Reporter
Ann Arbor, Mich.- In the middle of Michigan's postgame mourning, as Wolverines players recalled for the media how they stumbled for the fourth consecutive year to Ohio State, how they did it Saturday with an injured quarterback and a hobbled running back and a coach who might be headed to retirement, a cell phone rang.
The ring tone? The Ohio State fight song.
As if they needed a reminder of who ruined their day, their season and, for Michigan seniors, their careers.

OHIO STATE: Detroit Cass Tech grad scorches U-M; Tressel: 'Henne will see Vernon in his sleep'

November 18, 2007
By JON PAUL MOROSI
FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER
With the field emptying and Carmen Ohio complete after Ohio State?s 14-3 triumph, defensive end Vernon Gholston made his way toward the Michigan Stadium tunnel late Saturday afternoon.
Clad in a Michigan sweatshirt, Thomas Wilcher spotted him, moved into position, and became the Wolverine all day to stop Gholston in his tracks.
How?

He hugged him, of course.

Wilcher lettered in football and track at Michigan during the 1980s. But he also coached Gholston at Detroit Cass Tech.

?I told Vernon to have a great game,? Wilcher said, ?but to take it easy on us.?

Sorry, Coach.

Wells? 222 yards wallop Michigan, clinch Rose Bowl
Sunday, November 18, 2007
By JOSH WEIR
Repository sports writer

ANN ARBOR, MICH. Alex Boone pulled his 6-foot-8, 313-pound body over the wall and into the masses. Brian Robiskie clenched a rose in his teeth.

?We did it, J.O., we did it,? Chris ?Beanie? Wells said to teammate Jamario O?Neal as the Ohio State marching band hurried across the field to join the celebration.

The Big House turned into a big party Saturday afternoon, and the theme was all scarlet and gray. The Buckeyes would have made Woody Hayes proud, dominating on defense and allowing the bruising Wells to batter the Wolverines in a 14-3 win in front of 111,941 fans ? the second-largest crowd in Michigan Stadium history.

TODD PORTER

Roses or ...

By winning the Big Ten, Ohio State will land in the Rose Bowl ? unless there is a crazy ending to the college season. Head Coach Jim Tressel is more than pleased with going to the Rose Bowl, but he still seemed to hold out hope of a national title berth.

?We?re going to Pasadena unless it shakes out the other way,? Tressel said. ?Right now, we?re going to worry about Thanksgiving and final exams. When we get done with both of those, we?ll have a pretty good idea on Dec. 2 where we?re going.?

Challenge good

MITCH ALBOM: SENIORITIS -- Hart, Henne, Long 0-4 vs. OSU; Carr 1-6 vs. Tressel

A miserable day in every way

November 18, 2007
"It must be very difficult to win five ..."
-- Jim Tressel after Ohio State's fourth victory in a row over Michigan

For a fleeting moment during this fractured season, they believed the end might make up for the beginning. But the whistle blew Saturday, the ball was kicked off and of all the dreams the Michigan seniors once had, this mess, this train wreck, this wet, drizzly dud of a performance was not, could not, in any way, be what they had in mind. Balls dropped. Passes overthrown. Blocks missed. Rushes stuffed. A soaking farewell with three points scored?
Dud.

Ohio State notes

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Mike Hart was so irritated following the loss to Ohio State last year, he guaranteed Michigan would win if it got another crack at the Buckeyes.
That chance came Saturday, but Hart couldn't deliver.
Ohio State's 14-3 victory was even more satisfying for the players, since they silenced Michigan's biggest mouth.
"If you guarantee something, you better make it happen," Ohio State defensive back Jamario O'Neal said. "Otherwise, keep your mouth shut. I think we shut him up."
The two teams went nose-to-nose at midfield before the game even started. Both teams ran to the center of the field, as is custom, yet somehow it turned chippy.
"It was like a staredown at high noon," O'Neal said.

I dunno what that was all about, but the best part was when Mike Hart ran around to the front of the pack. It was like a Chihuahua making a loud entrance at a party at Michael Vick's house.

ESPN aired their film showing mouthharp in some assistant's vise grip being carried away from the fray.

btw--mh's run to the front of the pack: his longest run of the day.
