The 2002 Game (November 23, 2002):
Ohio State entered The Game a perfect 12-0 on the season, and *ichigan was looking to ruin another Buckeye national championship run, as they had done in 1969, 1973, 1993, 1995, and 1996. the Wolverines struck first with a field goal, but Ohio State gained the lead with a 2-yard touchdown run from freshman phenom Maurice Clarett. *ichigan closed the gap with another field goal, and then got the ball back with 8:40 left in the half. Facing third-and-9 at their own 9-yard line, the Wolverines ran a draw play to set up a punt. But running back B.J. Askew found a crease and ran for 11 yards and a first down. *ichigan would cap an 8-minute, 19-play, 88-yard drive with its third field goal to take a 9-7 lead into the locker room at halftime. Buckeye fans were saying, "Here we go again...."
There would be no scoring in the third quarter. With 8:30 left in the game, the Buckeyes went on their final scoring drive. On fourth-and-1 at the *ichigan 33-yard line, the Buckeyes opted to go for it instead of attempting a 50-yard field goal. Craig Krenzel converted with a quarterback sneak, and on the very next play he hit Clarett for a 26-yard gain on a "wheel" route. Two plays later, Maurice Hall scored a touchdown on a very awkward option play. The Buckeyes led 14-9 with 4:55 left to play.
But the Wolverines still had plenty of life left in them. On the ensuing drive they converted 3rd-and-7, 4th-and-4, and 3rd-and-5 and it began to look like the Buckeyes would need another miracle to win The Game. And they got it, as Will Smith sacked quarterback John Navarre, stripped the ball, and recovered the fumble at the Ohio State 36-yard line.
With just 2:02 left on the clock, Ohio State needed a first down to ice The Game. But nothing came easy for the Buckeyes in 2002, and The Game would be no exception. After three straight running plays netted only 2 yards, Ohio State punted the ball back to *ichigan, and the Wolverines took over on their own 20-yard line with 1:04 left to play. After converting a 4th-and-10, the Wolverines began to move the ball with relative ease and with one second left on the clock they had the ball at the Buckeyes 24-yard line with a chance to win The Game and crush the Buckeyes' season of dreams. Navarre launched a beautiful pass into quadruple coverage and Buckeye safety Will Allen sealed the victory with an interception.
Maurice Clarett rushed 20 times for 119 yards and a touchdown, while Craig Krenzel was a very efficient field general (10 of 14 for 124 yards), and the defense sealed the deal with two crucial turnovers down the stretch.
Final score: Ohio State 14, *ichigan 9
