Sushi, the Dispatch may have endorsed Bush, but I would think a newspaper would put something like important events on the front page. Putting STD's on the front page is setting up something like scientists discover Paris Hilton is a slut on there.

Ekeen,

One word for you: counseling.

I recommended that people guard against homophobia. Your answer is simply to demonstrate additional homophobia. Why are you so eager to throw in your two cents? Have any issues you need to deal with?

"Homophobia" is one of the words I absolutely loathe. Until the ass-bangers and carpet-munchers came up with the term on their own, it didn't exist in the world of psychology. Until the early 1970s, homosexuality was considered a disorder until the gay rights clans put pressure on the psychology world, and as we know, special interests groups always get their way in this country. "Homophobia" implies that if you don't enthusiastically accept or embrace homosexuality, you have a problem and are not normal. If you need any proof of how wrong it is, you just need to know that the University of Michigan has a class on how men should "explore their homosexuality".

Just because STDs are taboo, that does not mean they're not important news, especially when they are affecting a signifcant portion of the population which this particular newspaper is reporting for.

I don't see what the big deal about gay people is. As long as nobody's trying to shove anything in my browneye, we're cool.

Could someone please define for me what constitutes a homophobe, beyond the obvious "one who fears gay people." What actually defines "fear" is what I am gettting at.

I've asked this before, but if one is a homophobe because they oppose legalized gay marriage, then is someone who supports leagalized gay marriage a homophile? Or if a homophobe is someone who believes homosexuality is a sin and/or unnatural; then is someone who believes homosexuality is not a sin and/or is natural a homophile?

The Webster's New World Dictionary defines homophobia as "The hatred or fear of homosexuals or homosexuality." But your point is well taken. The word literally breaks down to fear of homosexuality. Still, the apparent need of some people to attack (verbally or physically) anyone who exhibits homosexual urges must be rooted in some form of serious anxiety. Even a religious argument against homosexuality does no justice to the extreme violence that is often directed against gay men. After all, beating the shit out of a gay man does little to make him change his sexual orientation. And there is no religion that I can name that encourages violence as a teaching tool.

As for your second statement, one doesn't have to love something just because one does not hate or fear it. I wouldn't label myself a homophile just because I respect various sexual orientations. Of course, someone with an irrational fear or hatred of homosexuals would likely label anyone who didn't also fear or hate them as a "fag lover" (the more colloquial term for homophile).
