The Big Ten Today (9/15)

I didn't see any threads started for any of these games, and none of these thoughts on their own seem to warrant their own thread, so I thought I'd start one to collect some of today's Big Ten miscellany.

Think Dantonio is making an impact at MSU? They're into the 2nd quarter against Pitt, and they have yet to give up any passing yards and have two INTs. BTW, one of those INTs was a tipped ball that was just returned for a TD, and the play-by-play guy for ESPN sounded like Kermit the Frog when he was announcing the play.

Wisconsin is tied with The Citadel (7-7) and Penn State is tied with Buffalo (3-3) - both at home in the 2nd quarter. I know the Bucks have to take care of their own business, but I don't think the talk of the conference being weak is about to end anytime soon. At least with a respectable opponent today, the Buckeyes can doe something to raise their own profile, even if the rest of the conference can't do it.

EDIT: Can somebody please move this to the College Football forum. I accidentally started it in the wrong place (again).

Been watching MSU-Pitt most of the time so far. It's been my first chance to see MSU in action under Dantonio. As one would expect, the MSU defense is improved. All in all, I don't know that they're better than they've been recently, but they seem like a much more stable team, which for them I guess is a good thing. The Buckeyes shouldn't have a problem handling them this season.

The league looks to be really suffering from the worst identity crisis I can remember. That said, there is no doubt in my mind that the media are feasting in large part because of BTN. It was not nearly 3-3 at the half in Happy Valley, which I just heard one media guy saying, it's 17-3. TSUN sucks, but Dantonio has Michigan State looking less fragile psychologically. Purdue and Illinois are winning against weak opponents.

Buckeyes need to nail this one today.

Wisky better get an earful from the coaches at halftime -
0:59 to go Citadel 21 - Wisconsin 21.

Thus far they are the only ones truly stinking up the joint.

Meanwhile:
Penn St. 17 - Buffalo 3
Illinois 17 - Syracuse nil
Akron hanging tough with Indiana - 17 - tied. (Kind of helps our win over the Zips.
Purdue duncing Central Mich 31-0
Gophers - for whom nobody had high hopes this year a TD back from Florida Atlantic 14-7 with 9:30 left in the 1st Quarter.

Three teams have been anointed "best in the conference" so far in this young season by the ESPN cognoscenti. scUM was first, and we all know what they did. Then it was Wisconsin, and they really struggled against UNLV last week. This week, I'm hearing it's Penn State. The Buckeyes may take over that (dubious) mantle if they put up a convincing win today.

Their running game looks solid, but their QB just looks green ( :tongue2: ) and plays very... uninspired to me. He stares down receivers so bad even I can tell who he's going to throw it to. But I definitely like what Dantonio has done. Spartans should easily go bowling this year.

I've only seen a couple highlights of the PSU game so far, but I'd say they're stinking up the joint even at 17-3. They've had a couple fumbles in that game that were more egregious than any of OSU's turnovers last week, and they're playing a team that is worse than Akron and with a dry football.

i'm not much for media conspiracy angles, but i have to agree with this statement. regardless, the big ten is providing plenty of material for the analysts. if the bucks dominate tonight, they will be considered the front runner for the big ten title.

I think that is very well said. If the Big Ten were playing better, the opportunity to trash the conference wouldn't be an option.
