The best places to coach in the Big Ten

OSUBuckeye4Life

"THE" Ohio State Buckeyes

By Tom Dienhart

I was talking to a Big Ten head coach recently, and I couldn't help but ask: Aside from the holy trinity of Ohio State, Michigan and Penn State, what are the three best Big Ten coaching jobs?
His answer: Iowa, Michigan State and Wisconsin.
Can't say I disagree with him, especially with Iowa and Wisconsin. Those are THE schools in their respective states, which means support is widespread. And that support translates to money, which translates to better facilities, salaries . . . well, I think you know where this leads -- or is supposed to lead.
And I can't say I'm surprised that he included Michigan State in the tier of next-best Big Ten jobs. I've seen a game in East Lansing, and the stadium and fandom are boffo. So, why aren't the Spartans better on a more consistent basis? The program has gone to just two bowls the last six years.
When I asked my Big Ten coaching buddy, he offered a quick "No comment."
Hmmm. Rarely does such a short answer say so much.
Anyway, here's how I rate the Big Ten coaching jobs.
1. Ohio State: The best of everything. Really, this is an NFL team in disguise.
2. Penn State: Could be No. 1, but OSU's history gives it the edge.
3. Michigan: Has to share the state with little brother MSU.
4. Wisconsin: Has made huge strides. Thanks, Barry!
5. Illinois: Should be better than Wisconsin, given the talent in the state and the fact it's the only big-time public program.
6. Iowa: A modern-day miracle, given the state's small population and presence of another prominent I-A program.
7. Michigan State: Has it all, including an inferiority complex.
8. Minnesota: Sure, it's cold and the stadium stinks, but the urban campus is something no other Big Ten school offers.
9. Purdue: Many don't even know where this place is. And the brass throws around money like sewer covers.
10. Northwestern: C'mon, it's a private school. 11. Indiana: No money, no fans, no tradition. Let's stop there.
