Matta's contract extended

For Ohio State, extending men's basketball coach Thad Matta's deal may have been a case of renegotiate now or renegotiate later.
A clause in Matta's original 8-year, $11.1 million contract would have let him renegotiate after May 1 if the Buckeyes were voted as a top 16 team or NCAA tournament fourth-seed or higher. OSU fans and players are hoping for that and maybe a lot more.
That Ohio State would re-work a deal just 19 months after Matta's initial contract could mean Ohio State Athletic Director Gene Smith shares in everyone's high expectations.
The undisclosed contract extension, confirmed by OSU officials this past weekend, still must be approved by the school's board of trustees Nov 3.
In two seasons, Matta already boasts a 46-18 OSU record, a Big Ten title and a heralded recruiting class.
"I'm hoping they'll have me here for a long time," Matta said at OSU's media day Oct. 12. "Whatever we've needed for the program, they've given us."
Matta's original deal called for him to make $245,000 in base salary, $305,000 in radio and TV gigs and $290,000 in athletic equipment contracts plus other cash this season.
Tickets available
Seats for several non-Big Ten home games are on sale. About 1,100 lower bowl seats and some upper bowl seats are available for the Ohio BCA Classic (Nov. 10-12) and games against San Francisco (Nov. 20), Valparaiso (Dec. 2), Cleveland State (Dec. 8), Iowa State (Dec. 19) and Coppin State (Dec. 30).
Tickets for these games also are available in the Schottenstein Center's upper bowl. Tickets can be purchased online at ohiostatebuckeyes.com or by calling 1 (800) GO-BUCKS.
Big Ten media day
All Big Ten men's and women's basketball coaches and select players meet in Chicago on Sunday. Player lists aren't for public consumption, but neither Greg Oden nor any of the other OSU newcomers will be there.
A team spokesman said Matta is still considering whether to bend a rule banning freshmen from talking to the media until they've played.
Matta said Oden may be out until Jan. 1 with a wrist injury.

There is an Insider's Article on E$PiN by Jay Bilas on Thad Matta and tOSU. Is anyone an insider? (probably not) If there is, would someone give me the run down? I like Bilas as a college analyst and thought it might be a worthwhile ariticle.

Ohio State extends Matta's contract

Business First of Columbus - 1:26 PM EST Friday

Ohio State University has tacked on another three years to the contract of men's basketball coach Thad Matta, signing him through the end of the 2014-15 season.
OSU trustees on Friday approved the new contract, which the university said is valued at $1.89 million this season. That total will rise to $2.63 million in the final year of the agreement.
Matta's compensation package was worth $1.2 million last season, including a base salary of $220,000. Such packages at Ohio State include income from endorsements, radio and televisions deals, annuity contributions, use of automobiles, camp payments and performance bonuses.
The total value of Matta's contract would come to $25.3 million if he remains coach through 2015, according to Ohio State.
Matta, 39, had been signed through the 2012 season. His teams have posted a 46-18 record during his two seasons as head coach. Last year's squad won the Big Ten championship. This year's freshmen class recruited by Matta has been called one of the best in the country by college basketball experts.
Matta has an "extraordinary gift" as a coach, OSU Athletics Director Gene Smith said in a press release.
"His energy and enthusiasm," Smith said, "are both tangible and contagious, and his results speak for themselves. He is a master coach and a teacher and a highly positive influence on the young men in the program."
Matta was named coach in 2004 after Jim O'Brien was fired for giving money to a former Buckeye recruit. Matta previously was head coach at Xavier University in Cincinnati and Butler University in Indianapolis.

Doesn't matter. The Wake Forest fans will be quick to tell you he's ready to leave the cupboards bare for a better job.

...It's the Hoosiers, right? Dammit! That's why Coach Groce was promoted to Associate Head Coach; in anticipation of Thad's inevitable departure. (in 2016) :mad1:
