A&M makes hiring of Washington AD Scott Woodward official

Tuesday, Eric Hyman surprised the college football world by announcing that he had “resigned” his position as the athletic director at Texas A&M. Three days later, and after reports suggested as such, A&M announced Hyman’s replacement: Scott Woodward, who held the same position at Washington since January of 2008.

99 years ago today, 17 Rice students raided the U.S. Armory in College Station to retrieve their stolen mascot

The Owl Is Abducted

On January 16th, 1917, Texas A&M defeated Rice in basketball, 21-13, [1] at Houston City Auditorium[2], to give the Aggies their first win over Rice in Houston in any sport in three years. As the Aggie basketball players, students, and alumni "former students" realized that Rice had left their mascot, a man-sized canvas owl stuffed with sawdust, unattended. J. Percy Street Thompson (A&M '17) and Sidney F Mitchell (A&M '18) gathered their fellow Corpsmen and hatched a plan.

The Aggies ceremonially inducted the owl into the Corps of Cadets, bestowing the rank of general on him [3]. A group of the men hoisted the nearly 200 lb bird onto their shoulders and lugged the giant mascot out of the building. When asked by the guard what they were doing, they calmly replied that they were returning the mascot back to Rice's campus. The guard let them pass, but once they got the bird into their car, they drove the mascot to the train station and shipped him to College Station care of Wells Fargo.

An absolute must read.

Lol at the history of Sammy.

Notable events[edit]
  • 1917 - Canvas depiction of Rice Owl stolen by students from Texas A&M. Mascot is recovered and given name Sammy.
  • 1986 - Sammy the Owl (Truscott) performs world famous "Shadow the SMU Drum Major" routine at halftime so successfully that letters were written to Rice President George Rupp from SMU officials.
  • 1991 - Sammy the Owl suit reinvented and redesigned to meet the needs of the 6'+ Keith Jaasma and Greg Meeks. Sammy appears increasingly frumpy in subsequent years as normal-size human beings inhabit the suit.
  • 1991 - Sammy's head is stolen during a road trip to UT.
  • 1992 - Keith Jaasma removed from Sammy the Owl duties because he is deemed so attractive that female game attendees stop watching the game and only watch Sammy do his patented Owl Shimmy. Official university records reflect that Mr. Jaasma "graduated" from Rice that year.
  • 1993 - While dressed as Sammy the Owl, Bill Breslin faints at half time during a televised Rice vs University of Texas at Austin football game (at Memorial Stadium), much to the concern of the referees.
  • 1995 - Student Sammy the Owl is tried before UCourt (Rice student judicial organization) on charges stemming from November 9, 1995 football game against No. 9 Texas A&M.
  • 1995 - Sammy the Owl elected homecoming queen.
  • 1996 - Sammy receives a make-over and a new suit is unveiled. This suit would later be ranked as one of the worst collegiate mascot uniforms.
  • 2004 - Sammy the Owl is featured in Playboy Magazine's story on College Mascots[2]
  • 2006 - Sammy's Owl suit is upgraded.
  • 2007 - Sammy joined Facebook.
  • 2009 - Sammy is ejected from a basketball game against Tulane for bumping an official.

Kyle Allen: Texas A&M dysfunction stems from Manziel-led culture
Kyle Allen says a frustrating “culture” left over from the Johnny Manziel era is partly to blame for Allen's recent departure from Texas A&M.

Aggies coach Kevin Sumlin saw both Allen and Kyler Murray -- two valued quarterback prospects -- transfer within a week of each other in December. The moves sparked questions -- still left unanswered -- about what was going on in College Station, Texas.

In what is believed to be his most in-depth interview on the subject, Allen detailed to CBS Sports the reasons he left A&M for Houston.

“I think the culture was a big part of it, and I think that stems from Johnny's era there -- the way that they let Johnny and [others] act there,” said Allen, the No. 1-rated pro-style quarterback in the 247Sports Composite for 2014. “They [could] do that and still win games because they had Johnny … and five offensive linemen playing in the NFL right now.”

Allen added: “A lot of people were riding off that, ‘I can do whatever the hell I want and win on Saturday.'"
