Tennessee guard Chris Lofton has minor leg injury, expected to play against Louisville

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP)?Tennessee guard and leading scorer Chris Lofton has a minor leg injury but is expected to play Thursday against Louisville in the NCAA tournament.

Lofton was at practice Tuesday but limited his activity to shooting free throws and riding an exercise bicycle. He did not speak to the reporters before leaving.

?(Tuesday) was just an opportunity to give it another day?s rest from a precautionary standpoint,? coach Bruce Pearl said. ?The ankle, the heel, the Achilles?it?s all pretty sore. We absolutely anticipate him playing. If we had a game tonight, he would play.?

Lofton hurt his ankle in the first half of Tennessee?s 76-71 overtime win against Butler in the NCAA tournament.

He leads Tennessee with 15.5 points per game.

Tennessee's Chris Lofton walks off the floor as Ohio State's Greg Oden, far left, and Ron Lewis celebrate the Buckeyes' 85-84 win last season, a game the Vols led by 17 points at halftime.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. ? Ask some of the Tennessee men's basketball players about the Sweet 16, and expect some bittersweet memories.
It was one year ago when the Volunteers were this close to defeating Ohio State in the NCAA Tournament's Sweet 16. UT had a 17-point lead at halftime and was poised to shock the nation.
But then it happened.
The Buckeyes came out in the second half and were unstoppable. They handed the Vols an 85-84 loss and later advanced to the national title game before losing to Florida.

Tennessee is playing better now, but they're still down by nine.

The Vols just tipped in a basket for Louisville while battling for a rebound. In a game like this that has a good chance to go down to the wire, that could be a VERY unlucky bounce.

Both teams are undisciplined. If Bo Ryan could get a hold of the talent on the court, and actually teach them fundamentals and the game of basketball, that would be one scary team.

I still expect Louisville to win because Tennessee is just a bunch of chuckers. But if the Vols get hot from the outside, they'll pull it out.

NCAA tourney roundup: Louisville's defense smothers Tennessee

Friday, March 28, 2008 3:11 AM

Louisville's suffocating defense has coach Rick Pitino a step away from a sixth trip to the Final Four.
Earl Clark had 17 points and 12 rebounds, and Pitino's mix of defenses made life miserable for Tennessee in a 79-60 win last night in Charlotte, N.C., to put the third-seeded Cardinals in the East Regional final.
Pitino, who has won two NCAA titles and has taken three schools to the Final Four, has Louisville playing top-seeded North Carolina on Saturday night.
