There actually has to only be a handful of teams that have lost 10 games in a season. I wonder where to find that list.
Actually, it happens more often than you might think, especially when a team has to forfeit games (Alabama forfeited 9 games in 1993 to finish 1-12; Mississippi State forfeited 9 games in 1976 and 5 games in 1977 to finish 0-11 both seasons). I don't know where you can find a list per se, but the College Football Data Warehouse and Stassen each has a list of every D-1 team's record for every season, so you can search those sites if you've got a couple of hours to spare.

Plenty of Big Ten teams have had 10 or more losses in recent memory:

1969 Illinois (0-10-0)
1997 Illinois (0-11-0)
2003 Illinois (1-11-0)
2006 Illinois (2-10-0)
1974 Indiana (1-10-0)
1984 Indiana (0-11-0)
2003 Indiana (2-10-0)
1971 Iowa (1-10-0)
1973 Iowa (0-11-0)
1999 Iowa (1-10-0)
1994 Michigan State (0-11-0) [five forfeits]
1983 Minnesota (1-10-0)
2007 Minnesota (1-11-0)
1976 Northwestern (1-10-0)
1977 Northwestern (1-10-0)
1978 Northwestern (0-10-1)
1979 Northwestern (1-10-0)
1980 Northwestern (0-11-0)
1981 Northwestern (0-11-0)
1989 Northwestern (0-11-0)
1993 Purdue (1-10-0)
1968 Wisconsin (0-10-0)
1988 Wisconsin (1-10-0)
1990 Wisconsin (1-10-0)

That's 25 times in the past 40 seasons, just for the Big Ten.

I didn't mean times it has happened. I know it has happened a lot before, i'm just saying that it happens to the same teams, and there have got to be a lot of teams out there that have never lost 10 games. I don't count Michigan State...they forfieted the games, but didn't really "lose" them. So that's 7 of 11 Big Ten teams that have lost 10. Means 4 haven't. How about any of the teams that are in the top 10 in win % in the county? I'm not really looking for an exact answer...i'm just saying...10 losses for a team that has a lot of history behind it, is rare.

Well, first of all, before about 1970, it was pretty difficult to lose ten games in a season, because most teams played only nine or ten regular season games.

But anyway, here are some "major" programs who are members of the ten-loss club: Alabama (0-10-0 in 1955); Auburn (0-10-0 in 1950); California (1-10-0 in 2001); Colorado (1-10-0 in 1980; 1-10-0 in 1984; 2-10-0 in 2006); Florida (0-10-0 in 1979); Florida State (0-11-0 in 1973; 1-10-0 in 1974); Georgia Tech (1-10-0 in 1981; 1-10-0 in 1994); Missouri (1-10-0 in 1971; 1-10-0 in 1985); North Carolina (1-10-0 in 1985; 1-10-0 in 1986; 2-10-0 in 2003); Oklahoma State (0-10-1 in 1991); Syracuse (1-10-0 in 2005; 2-10-0 in 2007); Virginia (0-10-0 in 1959; 0-10-0 in 1960; 1-10-0 in 1975; 1-10-0 in 1981); Washington (1-10-0 in 2004).

Alabama is 6th in all-time wins.
Florida State is 11th.
Auburn is 16th.
Florida is 17th.
Washington is 18th.
Colorado is 21st.

8 - Georgia (3-8 in 1953)

8 - Oklahoma (3-8 in 1996)

That makes Northwestern's turnaround (2 Rose Bowl appearances in the last 15 years) all the more remarkable.

I think what Bill Snyder did at Kansas State was even more amazing. From 1955-1988 KSU had one winning season (6-5-1 in 1982).

In his 4th year they won 9 games, and won at least that many in 10 of the next 11 years, including 6 eleven-win seasons.

They're 16-18 since he left, and they fired their coach today.

Actually, they have only one Rose Bowl appearance in the last 15 years (1996 Rose Bowl, after winning the 1995 Big Ten title outright). They went to the 1997 Florida Citrus Bowl after winning the 1996 Big Ten title (shared), and went to the 2000 Alamo Bowl after winning the 2000 Big Ten title (shared).

Kansas State firing Ron Prince is a travesty. What reason do those yokels have for thinking their "tradition" entitles them to higher expectations? Ron Prince was as good as they're likely to find.

Synder didn't win 9 games at KSU until his fifth season, not fourth. He was 18-26 in his first four years there. He was also 9-13 his last two seasons, which was probably the sign that their decade-long run of being a top-tier football program was done.

Ron Prince's team have regressed: 7-6 the first year, 5-7 the second, and 4-7 so far this year with a 1-6 conference record. They have losses this year by scores of 58-28, 58-35, 52-21, 41-24, and 56-28 (the last four of which have occured over the last four games). Whe you give up 52+ points four times and have lost your last four games by an average score of 52-27, you're going to take a lot of heat.
