Some background before the question at hand...
I grew up a Miami Dolphins fan. I first started watching the Dolphins in the mid-80's as a kid (I was born in '76). I followed Dan Marino's entire career out of college. I still argue with people about Marino being the greatest passer of all-time. At any rate, when Marino retired in 2000 I hung steady. I remained a DolFan despite the fact that I've never seen the Fins in a Super Bowl since I've been a fan of 22 years. My first year following them was in 1985. I also remained a fan even though every time I wear some Dolphin gear I feel like:
  • White trash. Only a couple of teams are more white-trashy, the Dallas Cowboys and the San Fransisco 49ers.
  • A homo. Does aqua make anyone feel like a man?
Finally, it pisses me off that I never get to see them play. I've been thinking of switching tio the Bengals because it just makes more sense. They're on television every week. I'm a Reds fan, and it's difficult to tell people that you're an Ohio fan outside of your NFL team. Ohio IS the NFL, with one of the first franchises of all time as well as the Pro Football HOF and Paul Brown. It's like saying you live in San Francisco and don't like....
trollies. I got you!
Anyway, should I stick with my team I've been following for 22 years, or is it time to fess up to my Marino man-crush and move on since he has?

note: Since the Bengals suck, it wouldn't be a bandwagon move. :)

Besides, aqua's faggy.

I had a feeling you'd say that...

I'd go with the Browns. They suck too :wink2:

besides they have Simon Fraser playing big minutes on the D-line so there is a Buckeye connection

Well, you can't be a Raiders fan because you've actually followed football beyond five years ago. :tongue2:

So I say go with the Ravens, because they have guns 'n' shit. It'll make up for the street cred you lost wearing aqua all those years.

On one hand, I would say stay with the Dolphins, because you've been a fan most of your life and they are actually starting to get somewhat better, but then on the other hand, I fully know the pain of being a fan of a team outside of where you live (atleast 350-400+ miles separates me from the Buckeyes, Eagles, Orange, and Yankees), so having a team closeby would be nice.

I guess you just have to decide whether or not you can fully accept the Bengals as your team. If you can, they go for it.

Well Ray Lewis rolls with knives at the ready, but I see your point

BTW, Dan Marino no longer plays for the Dolphins so what's holding you there?

I think that's kind of my question. Is it socially acceptable to switch teams after 22 years? Nothing really holds me there except my in-depth useless knowledge of past and present Dolphins, and the fact that I don't want to be "that guy" who is a fan of a different team every year. I kind of want to know what a board full of fans think about this type of thing.

Move on. I grew up a Pistons fans because I loved Isaiah and Dumars and the Bad Boys, but was no longer able to root for them when they became Grant Hill's team with those horrid light-blue uniforms. Then I had no qualms about hopping onto the Cavs' bandwagon when they got LeBron and brought back the wine-and-gold, and I'll probably become a fan of the Indians or Reds if/when we get their AAA team playing in the new Columbus park. I feel you are always free to start rooting for a home-state team for any reason.

I agree... :) There's nothing quite like a lifetime of sports heartache... Cleveland is the way to go. Besides, it makes college national championships even sweeter when you're used to getting so close... and being denied. (While you're at it, ditch the Reds and become an Indians fan.)

How the hell can anyone from Ohio (or anywhere else, for that matter) ever recommend that someone become a Ravens fan? I should ding you for that... :wink2:
