Woody wore Sambas
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20050703/ap_on_re_us/teacher_dress_codes

As a teacher, I found this article amusing. I have never been in a school-public or private-as a teacher or student, where the teachers were not expected to dress in a professional manner-tie or sweater in the winter, polo when it is warm. I don't know what kind of place would tolerate a teacher wearing flip flops or jeans every day-or have an environment where a teacher might think it is OK to wear a marijuana belt buckle in school. Personally, I think our Catholic school is a little lax in how it expects male teachers to dress-I don't think a teacher should come into school on a non-dress down day wearing even a "nice" t-shirt or a shirt w/out a collar. I think ties or sweaters should be mandatory.

I agree. When I was subbing, I know that's pretty much how I dressed. I'm pretty young, and quite frankly, alot of the kids I had in class were bigger than me. If you go into a classroom not dressing in a manner that commands a little respect, then you're just asking for trouble.

My first year of teaching I wore rugby shirts and khakis often because I was teaching first grade and that meant getting down on the floor, finger paints, glue, clay and playground duty.

If we had a field trip or I met with parents I wore a suit and tie.

I then took a job teaching innercity Catholic school kids, grades 5 - 8 and I continued to wear khakis and a rugby shirt until we went on a field trip. I wore a blue blazer and tie and immediately noticed an improvement in how the kids behaved so I asked them why. "When we saw you in a coat and tie we knew you were serious."

During my 20 years at Moeller I wore a knit (golf) shirt with pressed khakis during hot days at the beginning and end of the school year. From October through early may I wore a minimum of a dress shirt and tie, usually with a sport coat.

I look back on my own high school days and remember that every male teacher at Fairmont High School wore a coat and tie. Most wore suits.

I think the change in teacher dress adds to the sense that we are less "professional" than the rest of the professional world. I think it's reflected in how much we are paid.

My daughter's school has several female teachers that are young and drop dead gorgeous. I was there one day and one of said teachers was wearing low rise jeans. She dropped some papers and had to squat to get them.

Behold the hot pink thong and "aim here" tat!!!

Nice.

I wish we had female teachers like that at my school. Unfortunately, they mostly resemble either Skeletor or Jabba the Hutt........
