NICK VANNETT
Former Buckeye tight end Nick Vannett has been a regular piece of the Seattle Seahawks offense since his rookie season last year, but that hasn't really resulted in big numbers.
Vannett's role in Seattle's offense was mostly as a blocking tight end. Through 19 games, Vannett had just 10 receptions for a total of just 87 yards and no touchdowns.
On Sunday, he finally found the end zone.

Entering his third NFL season, and his first without Jimmy Graham and Luke Willson entrenched in front of him, Nick Vannett has a chance to finally break through and be Seattle’s primary tight end. Of course, the team added veteran Ed Dickson this offseason and drafted rookie Will Dissly, which adds competition for Vannett.
Additionally, it appears Vannett was battling with more than just his teammates, as coach Pete Carroll alluded to a back injury that has been “a nuisance to him for a couple years.”
Now that Vannett is fully healthy, he has had an opportunity to show off the skills that made him a third-round pick back in 2015.
“Nicky’s had a really good camp,” coach Carroll said on Tuesday. “He’s a really good catcher, he knows the system the best of any of our guys, he’s real versatile, and he’s a good competitive kid for us.”
The key here is that Vannett is a strong pass-catcher, something that both Dickson and Dissly are not. Dickson has had a very solid NFL career, but he has been almost exclusively used as a blocker, as evidenced by his 1,985 career yards in eight seasons. Vannett had 12 receptions (on 15 targets) for 124 yards and a touchdown last season.
With a new emphasis on the running game, look for Dickson and Dissly to be playing quite a bit and using their run-blocking skills to clear holes for Chris Carson and Rashaad Penny.
However, Vannett may be the guy catching passes from the tight end spot. And if he can use his huge six-foot-six, 286-pound frame in the red zone, he could give quarterback Russell Wilson a big, imposing target down near the goal line.

Nick Vannett and Jeff Heuerman are reuniting in Denver.
The Broncos now have two former Ohio State tight ends on their roster, as Vannett and Heuerman previously teamed up for the Buckeyes. Both were members of Ohio State's recruiting class of 2011 and played together through the 2014 season, after which the Broncos selected Heuerman in the third round of the 2015 NFL draft.
Former Ohio State defensive tackle Dre'Mont Jones and defensive back Tyvis Powell are also on the Broncos' roster.
Whether Heuerman and Vannett will remain teammates in Denver is uncertain, as some believe Vannett's signing could be a precursor to the Broncos moving on from Heuerman, who has been plagued by injuries throughout his NFL career. Heuerman signed a two-year, $9 million contract with the Broncos last offseason, but given that the Broncos have also drafted Big Ten tight ends in each of the last three years – Jake Butt in 2017, Troy Fumagalli in 2018 and Noah Fant in 2019 – Heuerman could potentially become a candidate for trade or release.
At least for now, though, Vannett and Heuerman will be teammates like old times.

Broncos' Nick Vannett doesn't sound happy about exit from Seahawks or his time with Steelers
Vannett is ready to begin anew with the Broncos in 2020
Tight end Nick Vannett is more than happy to put the 2019 season behind him. After beginning the year with the Seattle Seahawks, he was traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers and then hit free agency around his 27th birthday. In late March, Vannett agreed to terms with the Denver Broncos on a two-year deal.
Vannett is looking for stability with his new team. While there are plenty of other talented tight ends on the Broncos' roster, he believes he can tutor the young players, serve as a receiving option for developing quarterback Drew Lock and pave lanes for the dynamic duo of Melvin Gordon and Phillip Lindsay.
Known more for his prowess as a blocker, Vannett helped former Buckeye and current Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott rush for 3,699 yards and 41 touchdowns during their final two seasons together in Columbus. In 2018, Vannett's blocking helped Seahawks running back Chris Carson rush for 1,151 yards, as Seattle boasted the league's top-ranked rushing attack that season after being 23rd the previous season.
Vannett's exit from the Seahawks was not a pleasant one, however. Despite being a third-round draft pick back in 2016, Vannett felt like the Seahawks were very much ready to move on from him.
"I always felt like toward the end of my tenure with the Seahawks, I felt like I was slowly getting kicked to the curb a little bit," Vannett said, via Nicki Jhabvala of The Athletic. "They had another guy, a young guy, they brought in, (Will) Dissly, they were pretty high on and they kind of saw him to be my successor. I don't know, like slowly I feel like they kind of minimized my role, they weren't getting me involved as much. From what I heard, the Steelers were looking for a tight end and they had been trying to make an offer for quite some time, and I think they finally made an offer that the Seahawks couldn't refuse."
In 13 games with the Steelers in 2019, Vannett recorded just 13 receptions for 128 yards. While he admitted it took some time to get adjusted to his new NFL home, Vannett also said that problems within the organization hurt his experience in Pittsburgh. Ben Roethlisberger was out for the season due to injury, the Steelers kept switching quarterbacks and then of course there was the infamous Myles Garrett brawl that resulted in numerous suspensions.
"When I got to the Steelers, talk about a crazy three months there," said Vannett. "It seemed like I came into an organization where the wheels were starting to fall off a bit. Guys were getting hurt, Ben was down. So I feel like I never really got to experience the true benefits, the true atmosphere that the Steelers normally would have because I came in on a crazy situation.
"I don't know. I can't say I have too many great things to say about that organization just from my time being there because it wasn't the most pleasant experience I've ever had. So I can't really speak too much on them to be honest."

The Saints will be the fourth NFL organization for Vannett, who spent 2020 with the Broncos after beginning his career with three-and-a-half seasons in Seattle followed by a brief stint with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
