TE Jelani Thurman (Official Thread)

6-6 225 frame? Can we put him on the Taylor Decker diet?

I thought the same thing but Reid Fragel came to mind. Of course, a dynamic TE never hurts

Yes, I’m trying to turn him into an AA LT.

An obvious NIL connection there.

Welcome to the Buckeye Family, Jelani!!

:penguin:

Yeah, that’s the NIL deal that will turn him into an LT in a hurry

Welcome to the fam Jelani! He may not get the stats at OSU, but Wilson will make him a more complete TE. The NFL likes TEs that can block as well as catch. And OSU has TEs that last in the league for a long time because they can stay on the field for 3 downs

I don't think he would get the touches in a Meyer offense, but in a Day, pro-style offense, he may get the stats.

I don't think OSU has had the luxury of having faster, hulking TE's in the mix. They have it now.

I am sure Day would love to have a Kelce, Kittle or Gronk type weapon to kill defenses with.

OSU may finally be able to have a fully weaponized pro-style offense now.

Day had that TE, and his name was Jeremy Ruckert, and he didn't even have 30 catches! The TE just isn't a position that is utilized in OSU's offense. And with the WR talent that is on the roster, there just isn't many touches to go around to the TE, with trying to feed multiple WRs, and RBs.
And honestly, Meyer had multiple times where his TE was a top 3 in receiving stats while at UF, I would see Meyer using the TE more than Day, and even he barely used his TE talent at OSU

Only caveat here, is seeing how Day has continued to evolve the offense. The Spring Game was a good indication of this. Many more snaps coming from under center and more play-action where the TE's seemed to be featured.

I guess we've all been fooled by Spring games in the past, but it did seem like Day was putting more emphasis on new looks and sets that we haven't seen much of in the past. My guess is the Spring Game probably had a huge impact on Jelani's decision. Will be curious to see how it plays out in regular season.....

I hear you, and I hope we use the TE more in the passing game, since we have some serious talent from guys like Royer, Stover and Scott Jr. But who gets less balls thrown their way, JSN, MHjr, Egbuka, Fleming, Henderson, Williams, Pryor, Graves etc? Hartline has recruited the WR position so good that we all don't want to see less than 3 WRs on the field, because we all know how talented that room is!
OSU has 4 TEs in the NFL, which is as much as Bama and UGA, and I don't believe any of the OSU TEs even reached 500yds in the season or even 40rec. But yet they have productive NFL careers. That may have also been a selling point for Thurman. Become a complete TE, who is a competent blocker, and earn your big bag in the league

Could you imagine having the option to throw the ball to a TE? The trickeration involved would be mind-blowing.

Yea, every year we seem to hear that the TE is going to be utilized more in the passing game. I'll believe it when I actually see it. That being said it's still always nice to have extremely talented guys at the position.

It sure is nice to have these extremely talented guys. And like clock work, we watch them block on Saturdays and maybe get 1-2 catches :roll2:

Been hearing it since Ricky Dudley left. I'd love to see it, but like you I'll believe it when it happens.

Dudley's 95 season was 37/575/7 TD

Since then the 3 best TE receiving seasons.

2021 Ruckert 26 Catches 309 yards 3 TD
2017 Marcus Baugh 28 Catches 304 yards 5 TD
2013 Jeff Heuerman 26 Catches 466 Yards 4 TD
