TE Gee Scott Jr. (Official Thread)

When I think of the HS film I have watched of him... Never dawns on me that he is that big...
6'3 225 is a big WR... IMO he has amazing pass catching skills but is he big enuf to be a TE.. at the next level?

Well if that's his size as a true Soph, he has a good start.
For comparison sake: Kellen Winslow Jr 6'4' 240
George Kittle 6'4' 250
Jonnu Smith 6'3' 245
Robert Tonyan 6'5' 237
TJ Hockenson 6'4'' 250
Kyle Pitts 6'6' 240

If Scott Jr. were to work on putting on weight with Coach Mick and the dietician then its realistic to think he could be almost 240lbs by next season. Heck, he could be in the 230lbs by this season! And at 19, I'm sure he could possibly grow another inch or even 2.

He looks like he could put that weight on.

Is it really so hard to believe that the success the TE’s had in the Sugar Bowl may have been noticed by the author’s of that success?

I understand the “I’ll believe it when I see it” mentality, but you’ve seen it. Yes, it was only in one game, but the guys who came up with that game plan saw it too.

Gee Scott has the toughness and work ethic to make this work, one way or the other. I expect great things from him.
He's no doubt a complete mismatch for anyone that guards him.

Could be a little short for TE, but I would think he'd more than make that up with the athletic/receiving ability. I think it's a great move. The NFL seems to be moving to that type of player and Wilson will teach him to block.

There are some NFL TE's at the same height or shorter than Gee. Imo, he's most comparable to Evan Engram. Engram was 6'3 227 at Ole Miss. That's basically the same measurables as Gee Scott now.

Gee Scott - 6'3

Delanie Walker - 6'0
Evan Engram - 6'3
Jordan Akins - 6'3
Irv Smith - 6'2

Scott’s move came as a surprise when it was revealed this spring, but the decision wasn’t made on a whim. Scott went to the coaches and made the suggestion himself. Being a big receiver at 6-foot-3 and over 210 pounds, it was also revealed that he was doing everything he could to stay at a receiver’s weight and that maybe it was best for everyone if he just listened to his body and made the move up to tight end.

“I think he and his dad thought about it, and with his size, I would kind of joke around a year ago when he showed up like, ‘Hey, you know, you put an extra patty on that cheeseburger there and make it a double and we can make you a tight end real quick here,'” offensive coordinator and tight ends coach Kevin Wilson said last month.

If a player isn’t all-in on a position move, the move won’t work. For this to be Scott’s idea, that bodes well for the future. You don’t have to look long or hard in today’s game to find tight ends who can alter an offense just as much if not more than a wide receiver. Defending a tight end who who runs like a wide receiver is always going to pose problems, but that’s only one part of the job.

He’s beginning to strike me as a rare body type that fans are always unrealistically comparing other players to. I can easily see a future where we are calling every 6-3ish 210ish recruit “the next Gee Scott”. And like Florida fans looking for the next Percy Harvin, we could go more than a decade without seeing his like again.

in other words, Gee might be the source of unrealistic expectations for other players in the same way that off-season speculation is the source of these unrealistic expectations for Gee.

His body is really no different than Marvin Harrison Jr(Julian Fleming is also close to the same size at 6'2 205lbs)... And before them Brian Robiskie was also a very similar size. Honestly that height and weight aren't all that unique for WRs

The difference here seems to be that he has the frame to carry more weight and perform. Other guys with a more slender build don't have that ability.

As Bill Lucas alluded to below, the difference is Gee was having to restrict his diet to maintain that 210 lb frame. Naturally, it could get bigger, but he had been working to stay in 210 lb range.

By not restricting his diet, he is going to put weight on immediately.

Obviously, I’m sure Kyle Pitts success has had an influence on this. I think Gee will likely split time between end of formation and being split out. I hope Day and Wilson are able to incorporate his skill set into offense.

I said it a couple pages back, but he’s Evan Engram. His body type is exactly what Engram’s was at Ole Miss.

Good point. The comparisons will come with guys like Gee (and Jake Stoneburner) who start out at WR size but have a frame that just begs for more weight.
