Co-OC/TE Coach Keenan Bailey (National Champion)

Ohio State football coach carjacked near Ginn Academy while on recruiting visit; suspects caught after police chase

CLEVELAND — Ohio State football tight ends coach Keenan Bailey was the victim of a carjacking Monday near Ginn Academy that resulted in a police chase and the arrests of four youths.

Bailey, 28, was not harmed in the incident and has resumed recruiting, a team spokesperson told cleveland.com and The Plain Dealer. Bailey posted a photo of himself in Canada on Tuesday morning on his X.com page.

The incident was part of a carjacking spree by four youths, ages 15 to 18. They were arrested near East 107th and St. Clair Avenue after a chase that involved a police helicopter.

Authorities said the youths robbed Bailey at gunpoint, stealing his Dodge Durango. The youths then attempted to carjack two women, but the pair drove away from the attack, according to authorities. A police chase ensued, and the four youths were arrested.

The youths are expected to be charged today.
Bailey is in his first year as a full-time assistant but has been on staff in various capacities since 2016.

Cleveland Councilman Mike Polensek, who is on the board of the Ginn Academy, said the incident involving the coach happened in the school’s parking lot while classes were in session, early in the afternoon.

He said he was notified after a Cleveland municipal court judge called him late last night as he was leaving another meeting about crime in the community.

“I’m disgusted about it. It’s bad enough that this crime took place in our community but in an area that has little crime,” Polensek said.

And then he heads to Canada. Crootin don’t stop.
Glad he’s safe and was not harmed. I can only imagine how scary that situation is

Zach Smith talked about it after the incident. He said that it’s generally an unwritten rule in inner cities not to mess with coaches. That they are providing an opportunity to kids in bad situations, so they are able to go into crime-ridden areas without stuff like this happening. Added that he would rather face the judge than Ginn Sr.

Bailey, who will continue to coach Ohio State’s tight ends, is entering his third year as the Buckeyes’ tight ends coach and ninth overall season on the Buckeyes’ staff. Since joining Ohio State as an offensive intern in 2016, Bailey has spent time working with all five position groups on offense, making him well-qualified to assist Brian Hartline in coordinating the Buckeyes’ offense in 2025.
Despite never being a full-time coach before his promotion to tight ends coach in 2023, Bailey has been viewed as a key component to Ohio State’s offensive and recruiting operations behind the scenes for years.
“Probably the most unsung hero on our staff, the hardest worker in the building,” Ryan Day said of Bailey during Ohio State’s national championship celebration at Ohio Stadium last month.
Bailey becomes the third returning assistant coach on offense to receive a promotion for the 2025 season, joining Hartline with his promotion to offensive coordinator and new quarterbacks coach Billy Fessler, who was previously an offensive analyst for the Buckeyes. New offensive line coach and run game coordinator Tyler Bowen will be the only new full-time assistant on the offensive side of the ball while running backs coach Carlos Locklyn returns for his second season with the Buckeyes.
Ohio State remains in the market for another defensive coach as it has not yet named a new defensive coordinator to replace Jim Knowles. Day said Friday that he hoped to finalize his coaching staff for the 2025 season this week.
