Saturday’s game against Western Michigan marked the fourth game in as many weeks for both the football team and The Ohio State University Marching Band. While the band did spend time getting ahead on learning shows before the start of the season, having only a week between new shows poses a challenge when your shows are as complex as those performed by the OSUMB. Never the less, TBDBITL once again lived up to its reputation, putting on a performance that thrilled all of those in attendance.

Pregame got off to its usual start with the ramp entrance followed by the Western Michigan fight song. Up next was Script Ohio; after performing a quadruple Script for the alumni band game and a double Script last week, this was the first performance of a single Script this season. Following “Carmen Ohio”, the band launched into its standard tunnel sequence for the team’s entrance and then concluded pregame with “The Star Spangled Banner”.

This week’s halftime show was designed to thrill adults and children of all ages as the OSUMB took us under the big top to enjoy the music of the circus. The show opened at the Buckeye Big Top as the band performed “Entrance of the Gladiators” (yes, that is the name of the song that you most associate with circuses) with several nods to OSU school songs incorporated into the arrangement. The tent then morphed into a large clown before becoming an OSU circus wagon. Up next was an animated pair of trapeze artists appropriately set to “The Man on the Flying Trapeze”. Of course one of the best parts of the circus for many people are the animals and the OSUMB didn’t forget them, forming an elephant that walked and put its feet up on a ball; the elephant was followed by a roaring tiger. Drum major David Pettit then got a chance to show off his twirling and juggling skills to “Sabre Dance”. The drum major wasn’t the only one to show off his juggling skills as the band then formed an animated, dancing juggler. Unfortunately the show must come to a close and the circus tent closed to a reprise of “Entrance of the Gladiators”.

Halftime concluded with a salute to all of the Ohio State student athletes who joined the band on the field to make a large, red block ‘O’. The student athletes then remained on the field, leading the crowd in singing along to “Hang On Sloopy”.

This was a fun halftime show with a very creative them that brought together a range of musical styles. The theme lent itself well to some fun formations, including some of the band’s trademark animated forms.

The football team hits the road next week but the band will be staying home as they host the annual Buckeye Invitational high school band competition and festival. The Invitational starts at 10:00 am and concludes with a performance by TBDBITL at 7:30 pm. Tickets are $12 and can be bought online; a full schedule of the band performance and instructions for purchasing tickets can be found on the OSUMB website.
