While most of you were out shopping or enjoying your Thanksgiving leftovers, the members of The Ohio State University Marching Band were reporting back to campus last Friday and getting to work. With The Game only one day away, there was no time to waste in putting the finishing touches on the final performance of the season. After a morning rehearsal, the band loaded buses and headed north where they spent Friday night performing a concert in Toledo to get area OSU fans pumped for the big game; by tradition the OSUMB never stays in the state of Michigan and will instead stay in Toledo before trips to Ann Arbor or East Lansing.

The downside to staying in Toledo is that there is still more travel time to get to the game and the band was up early Saturday morning for the ride to Ann Arbor. After a morning rehearsal and lunch, it was game time. While the band is not as hated as the football team, they don’t get a warm reception from Wolverine fans and performing in Ann Arbor is definitely hostile territory. When I was in band, most band members enjoyed this, the boos and insults from the fans actually serving to get us more pumped for the performance.

In the past the band would tend to perform a patriotic show in Ann Arbor under the reasoning that even Wolverine fans couldn’t boo a show about America. That tradition has ended in recent years and this Saturday saw the band reprising their Sound of Music show from the previous week’s Michigan State game. In the video below the Michigan fans can be heard booing as the band takes the field but those boos stop as soon as the band starts to perform. While the dancing marionettes didn’t get the cheers they did in Columbus, even Michigan fans couldn’t dislike them, and the end of the show drew at least polite applause which is pretty much the best you can expect in that stadium.

Unfortunately there are no videos on Youtube of the Michigan Marching Band’s performance but it is probably safe to say that OSU won halftime as well.

Like the football team, the OSUMB now awaits the announcement as to what bowl game they will be going to. Each bowl game handles bands slightly differently and the amount of performance time the band will get will depend on the bowl game. TBDBITL didn’t get its reputation by waiting until the last minute though so they are already starting to prepare their bowl game performance.
