After performing several one week shows to start the season, The Ohio State University Marching Band finally got a little bit of a break when the football team headed to Indiana a week and a half ago. Of course for the marching band a bit of a break means not having to learn an entire new show in a week but they were still busy hosting the annual Buckeye Invitational high school band competition while of course preparing for this past Saturday’s Maryland game.
This week’s theme was Jazz Memories. The show opened with Dizzy Gillespe’s “Manteca” which was followed by “A Night in Tunisia”. Drum major Nathan McMaster got to show off his skills in “Oye Coma Va”. The drill for this show was definitely a bit of a throwback compared to a lot of what has been seen from the OSUMB in the past few years, featuring a lot more rotating blocks and pass throughs. This was a nice thing to see, showing off the band’s versatility and exposing the students to other drill styles. It also had a greater significance though as the drill was designed to reuse a lot of drill that had previously been written by former TBDBITL Director Dr. Jon Woods who passed away last month; this was a very fitting way to pay tribute to the beloved former director, letting the audience once again see his creative output performed by the band that is his legacy.
Fans at Saturday’s game didn’t get to experience just one band though as Maryland’s marching band made the trip, visiting Ohio Stadium for the first time. The Maryland band performed a Star Wars show featuring the “20th Century Fox Theme”, the opening title music to the movies, and the “Imperial March”.
Normally Sunday would be a day off for the band but not this week as the OSUMB traveled to Cincinnati for their annual NFL game performance; the band alternates between performing at a Browns or a Bengals game each year. The band entered the field for pregame to “I Wanna Go Back”, performing some block drill before spelling out “Bengals”. The band then got the crowd going with the “Hey Cheer” before marching off to “Across the Field.”
Halftime started with a floating ‘OHIO’ formation while playing “Buckeye Battlecry”. The crowd cheered along as the band performed “Hang On Sloopy” before concluding with a double Script Ohio.
The band will return to action this Saturday at the night game against Penn State; band fans will remember that the band normally breaks out something special for night games and I know I will be eagerly awaiting what they have in store for us this time.
