The Buckeyes (7-5) continue their four game home stand with a game against South Carolina State this Sunday. Ohio State is on a bit of a tear, winning three consecutive games. The Bulldogs (5-8) of the MEAC are trending the other direction; they have lost three consecutive games. This is SCS’s first of three consecutive games in the Buckeye State. Following their game against Ohio State, the Bulldogs play at University of Akron (December 30th) and at Miami (OH) on January 2nd. I’m not sure what their travel plans are, but it’s good to see a team from South Carolina spend the Holidays in Ohio.
Let’s start by taking a look at some team comparisons.
PPG-O PPG-D RPG FG% 3PT% FT%
Ohio State 71 63 38 45.0% 33.0% 65.0%
South Car State 72 75 33 43.0% 35.0% 78.0%
So, what do we have? At first glance, there is really not much to separate these teams, aside from OSU’s abysmal free throw shooting percentage. Well, OSU does seem to play much better defense and does rebound a bit better than SCS. Personally, I prefer the better defense, although good free throw shooting would be a nice feature
South Carolina State University
The Bulldogs bring substantial experience to the court. They (likely) will start 2 seniors (McCray, Palmer) and 2 juniors (Mortimer, Eaves) against Ohio State. Aside from this 3-game skid, the Bulldogs haven’t been able to string any streak together this season
Here are the Bulldogs, likely starter in bold:
Nbr Name Pos MPG FG% 3PT% FT% RPG APG PPG
22 Eaves, Eric G 27.5 40.6% 34.5% 77.4% 2.20 1.8 14.3
1 Stephens, Ed G 31.1 42.6% 42.5% 84.6% 2.50 1.9 13.8
0 Mccray, Gabriel G/F 24.2 47.8% 30.8% 68.1% 4.80 0.9 11.1
3 Mortimer, Greg G 24.5 38.0% 37.5% 85.7% 2.10 2.5 8.6
30 Palmer, Darryl C 25.7 44.3% 10.0% 56.0% 5.50 0.9 7.8
2 Riley, Tashombe F 20.8 49.5% 25.0% 85.7% 5.20 0.5 8.1
23 Soloman, Ty G 20.5 36.8% 33.3% 100.0% 2.10 4.3 3.3
33 Radovic, Luka F 8.8 52.4% 42.9% 72.7% 2.20 0.2 2.5
24 Pritchett, Najee G 8.3 27.6% 20.0% 18.2% 1.30 0.3 1.9
5 Gueye, Doudou C 6.8 54.5% 0.0% 0.0% 1.50 0.2 0.9
34 Reid, Jaylen F 6.7 25.0% 0.0% 0.0% 0.30 0.3 0.7
20 Williams, Bobby G 2.4 0.0% 0.0% 100.0% 0.20 0.4 0.4
The Huskies run a 3G/1F/1C lineup, their stats above. They aren’t particularly tall, with Palmer (6’8″) and Eaves (6’7″) providing some height. Reserve forwards Riley (6’7″) and Radovic (6″9″) do provide some size off the bench. The player to keep an eye on, and hope the Buckeyes do, too is 6’2″ guard Ed Stephens. He leads the team in scoring (13.8 ppg) based on 42% shooting, both from beyond the arc and overall. He also cans 85% of his free throws. Over 60% of Stephens’ FG attempts are from 3-point range, so the Buckeyes have to more diligent in their defense switches and working over (not under) screens.
Ohio State
This is Ohio State’s last non-conference “tune-up” game. Based on the last two contests, I’m interested to see how they begin the game. Against Kentucky, they were high-effort for 40 minutes. Against Mercer, they slept-walked through the first half. This will be a good game to “practice” playing all out for 40 minutes before Big Ten play begins..
And, for the Buckeyes:
Nbr Player Pos MPG FG% 3FG% FT% RPG APG PPG
2 Marc Loving F 34.6 42.7% 33.3% 78.6% 6.2 1.5 14.6
33 Kieta Bates-Diop F 32.3 45.9% 31.3% 78.9% 6.0 1.5 12.1
1 Jae’Sean Tate F 29.1 53.3% 39.1% 52.5% 6.9 1.3 12.0
13 JaQuan Lyle G 29.9 38.9% 32.4% 57.9% 3.7 4.4 9.8
32 Trevor Thompson C 16.6 59.1% 0.0% 76.0% 4.4 0.2 5.9
15 Kam Williams G 16.9 45.6% 38.7% 80.0% 1.4 0.8 5.7
4 Daniel Giddens C 20.0 0.526 0.0% 0.348 4.5 0.6 4.8
0 Mickey Mitchell F 8.0 0.0% 0.0% 0.0% 3.0 0.0 0.0
10 David Bell F 8.5 66.7% 0.0% 72.2% 2.4 0.2 2.8
12 A.J. Harris G 11.4 30.3 30.8% 50.0% 0.9 1.1 1.8
14 Joey Lane G 2.0 20.0% 50.0% 50.0% 0.0 0.0 0.3
Not much new here other than; 1) Austin Grandstaff is no longer with the program and 2) Mickey Mitchell is. Mitchell saw his first action against Mercer, and in 8 minutes grabbed 3 rebounds, 2 of them offensive rebounds. Ohio State’s long range shooting was a dismal-embarrassing 13% (3-22) against Mercer, but Joey Lane was 50% ( 1-2) from beyond the arc. Thad, the evidence is self-evident…
Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 PM ET at VCA. The game will be televised on BTN, can be followed on Gametracker and heard on 97.1.
