Air Force Academy vs. Ohio State Tuesday December 8th at Value City Arena @ 8:00 PM ET
The Buckeyes rebounded off their 4-game skid this past Saturday by beating VMI in Columbus 89-62. They now stand at 3-4 for the season.
The Falcons of the US Air Force Academy are currently 6-2 and are riding a 3 game winning streak. Their most recent victory came this past Saturday on the 5th in Denver against the University of Denver 61-59.
The Buckeyes got their confidence back after the victory against the Keydets of VMI. But the Falcons of the US Air Force Academy are looking to bring them back into their slump.
This just may be a tougher game from the perspective of both sides.
Let us review the situation…
The Buckeyes
As the Buckeyes season unfolds we are witnessing a talented lot. Marc Loving is leading all scorers with an average of 17. Kieta Bates-Diop is coming in with 12.7 points per game. And Jae’Sean Tate is at 11.7 points for an average. Rebounding Jae’Sean Tate is averaging 7.3. Marc Loving is @ 6.6.
The Buckeyes have been a little unpredictable this year as we have witnessed. Surprise losses to Texas-Arlington and Louisiana Tech. were notable disappointments in this early season. They needed very much a game that allowed them some breathing room, getting their gel together, as this team gets use to one another. The VMI game provided that.
As this season progresses we shall see more from the other players such as Trevor Thompson, A.J. Harris, and Kam Williams, even Austin Grandstaff. For this to transpire the season will have to move on … and in some cases as Buckeye Fans we may simmer to disappointment.
But understand … this young team does have talent and a lot of it.
The Falcons
The US Air Force Academy is having the beginning of a fine season. At 6-2 they have beaten Tennessee Tech. 80-70, Mississippi Valley State 65-54, Robert Morris University 64-52, New Mexico State 66-64 (OT), The Citadel 97-93, and the University of Denver 61-59. Their losses were at the hands of Southern Illinois 77-75 and Colorado 81-70.
Unlike VMI Air Force is a bigger and faster team. On their roster are players such as: SR Center 6’11” Zach Moer, SO Center, 6’8” Brendan Leonard SO Forward 6’7” Frank Toohey and JR Forward 6’7” Kyle Broekhuis. Also on their roster is Upper Arlington JR 6’0” Guard Danny Hummer.
SO Guard Trevor Lyons 6’3” leads the Falcons in scoring, averaging 16.0 points per game. Hayden Graham 6’5” JR Forward is averaging 15.9 points per game. Hayden Graham also leads the team in rebounds with 9 per game. Zach Broekhuis is hitting at .667 on 3 pointers.
The Falcons have proven they can score points. They are quite capable on the offensive side of the ball. The discrepancies facing this team come from the defensive side. They do not always react positively on a fast break. This is not based on the lack of wheels, but confusion appears to ignite for that split second that matters for the opposition.
Final Summation
As much as I hate to say this – this game can go either way. The important point to make here is based solely on the Buckeyes. Depends on which team shows up. If the team that played and dominated VMI shows up, then look for some of last Saturday’s magic to repeat. But if the team that lost to Texas-Arlington comes out of the locker room expect for a long and perhaps disappointing night.
I have to remain optimistic. I believe the Buckeyes regained their confidence in the VMI victory. Coach Matta will have them back on a roll. So with that said I expect for a Buckeyes victory against the US Air Force Academy on Tuesday in Columbus. There will be a lot of points scored – from both sides. But the Scarlet and Gray should notch their 4th win and climb back into the .500 arena.
