Thad Matta’s Buckeyes(4-5) look to rebound from the loss to the UCONN Huskies and take on another Huskies squad that is not struggling at the moment under fourth year man Mark “Monty” Montgomery in Northern Illinois(7-1). That being said, the Buckeyes are only the second team from a Power Five conference that they have played and lost to Mizzou the last time they were on the court by a final of 78-71.

NIU Huskies at a Glance
The Huskies placed four of their stars in double digit scoring against the hot-shooting Tigers on December 4th in the loss and hung in, despite a torrid shooting pace put on by the home team. Freshman Marshawn Wilson scored a career high 24 points and was joined by sophomore Marin Maric with 14, Travon Baker with 11 and Aaric Armstead with 10. However, none of the four hit high numbers in rebounding and the Huskies were out-rebounded for the first time this season according to their official website.
Armstead, Wilson and Maric all average double digits in average scoring so far on the season and present a challenge to the Buckeyes on the perimeter as all three shoot the ball well especially Armstead and Wilson from three. The Huskies bench is deep and they have played ten players on a consistent basis so far this season.

The one thing the Buckeyes can work on is not allowing the losing streaks to become a thing this season. After winning their first two games, losing the next four by combined scores 300 to 276, then winning a couple more, they came crashing back to reality in their trip to Stores, Connecticut. All of the Buckeyes shooting percentages are dropping with the exception of free throws which they outdid UConn in for the game. As a team, the UConn Huskies held the Buckeyes to 35% on the night and if the Buckeyes want to keep this at a one game losing streak they will need to improve their shot selection.
The Buckeyes are playing their typical eight men in each game and need to find ways to get a hot hand early with Keita Bates-Diop and Marc Loving. Jae’Sean Tate is the second leading shooting percentage player on the Buckeyes squad and is shooting 50% from long range so maybe he needs to shoot more from there?
Player
For the Buckeyes it’s pretty simple, shoot better and do so by getting the ball moving up and down the court. The Buckeyes have appeared to be a running team at different times this season and maybe when they play a better defensive team they struggle. Most times, if they can get some of the youngsters involved on the move like Giddens and Lyle they can be tough to defend.
For the Huskies, they just need to continue with their big three taking care of things and pull the Buckeyes away from the hoop. There’s a pretty good chance they will have the upper hand slightly in experience and I have to admit it will be interesting to see the two super frosh taking each other on between Jaquan Lyle and Marshawn Wilson.
Prediction
I hate to admit it but I think the Buckeyes take one on the chin here. The Huskies have a nice squad this season and have a young coach that will have them ready to come into the Schott and win the ball game. Huskies in the upset? Not really this season, they are the better team and will win 75 to 69.
