Saturday December 5th @ 4:30 pm The Ohio State Men’s Basketball meets up with Virginia Military Institute (VMI) of the Southern Conference.

The Buckeyes stand at 2-4 with a current 4 game skid. The latest loss was against #10 Virginia in the ACC/Big Ten Shootout on Tuesday. In that game, Marc Loving led all scorers for the Scarlet and Gray with 19. Kieta Bates-Diop added 15 along with a 3-pointer at a critical moment of the game. Alas, the Buckeyes fell short, 64-58.

The Keydets of the Virginia Military Institute currently stand at 3-3 with their latest win coming on December 2nd against Central Pennsylvania College 107-72. In this match, Tim Marshall led all scorers with 21 points, followed by QJ Peterson’s 18. Three players would have 8 rebounds: QJ Peterson, Phillip Anglade, and Trey Chapman.

This is the 3rd time that the Buckeyes and the Keydets have meet. The most recent in 2011 when the Buckeyes demolished them 107-74. In this current matchup VMI is guaranteed a $95,000 payday from The Ohio State University Athletic Department. Thus is the reason for VMI to schedule such dates – if by chance you are asking? But the way the Buckeyes have been playing don’t leap into Confidence-Ville so fast.

Allow us to look it over.

THE BUCKEYES:

The Buckeyes are loaded with young talent: six freshmen, and four sophomores. In the matchup with Virginia the starting five had only Marc Loving, a Junior, as the “senior” statesman. Kieta Bates-Diop, a sophomore shined, and three freshmen – JaQuan Lyle, Daniel Giddens, and A.J. Harris would all manage only 7 points among the three of them. Sophomore center transfer Trevor Thompson would deliver 5 points coming off the bench.

Ultimately the Buckeyes have been an early disappointment. With losses to Texas-Arlington, Louisiana Tech, Memphis, and now Virginia there were at least two projections in these four losses they were seen as winning.

What exactly is going on here?

The Buckeyes have a group of kids that are talented. Each of the freshmen just a year ago were top stars at their High Schools – most likely the “lone” star. Players such as Marc Loving (Junior) and Kieta Bates-Diop (Sophomore) are being given time to shine after playing last year in the shadows of D’Angelo Russell, Shannon Scott and Sam Thompson. The problem appears that the team hasn’t yet meshed. The inconsistencies of this team are dominantly noticeable. But even with all of the holes in the armor – the Buckeyes have promise.

Marc Loving is currently leading all scorers for the Buckeyes – averaging 17.6. Jae’Sean Tate leads all Buckeyes with 7.7 rebounds per game thus far. And JaQuan Lyle is leading in assists with 5.8.

THE KEYDETS:

VMI is not an experienced team either. On their roster are two seniors – Phillip Anglade who at 6’5” leads the team with an average of 6 rebounds per game in this short season thus far. The other senior, Jordan Weethee is a 6’6” Red-shirted Forward is averaging 5.3 ppg.

The Keydets leaders are QJ Peterson 6’5” Guard in scoring averaging 20.6 per game. Phillip Anglade, mentioned above, a 6’5” Senior Forward is leading with 6 rebounds. And QJ Peterson also leads in assists with 3 per game.

QJ Peterson, a Junior out of West Virginia, is a star player for VMI. But often under the pressure of playing against stronger teams he is unable of carrying the load. The case can be made for this in the Keydets loss in their first game of the season against Penn State 62-50. In 30 minutes of play Peterson managed only 8 points. It would be in the games following such as against Tusculum in a victory 88-76 that he’d nail 24 points. In the win against Presbyterian 76-61 he would have 25.

I am not picking on QJ …. He is their star. He can and will score.

FINAL SUMMATION:

The Keydets are not a big team. There is not one player on the team over 6’6”. And at that height they are loaded – six players. Nor are they an exceptionally fast team. QJ Peterson appears to have the wheels for the Keydets and 6’3″ guard Tim Marshall can shine.

Ex-Navy Assistant Dan Earl, first year coach of the Keydets, has a team with desire but is limited on big time players.

The Buckeyes seem to dominate teams such as VMI while having difficulties with ranked teams, or even the surprise elements delivered by “not-bad” teams such as Texas-Arlington and Louisiana Tech.

Undoubtedly this will be a primer for the Buckeyes before they start taking on teams such as Connecticut, Kentucky, even Northern Illinois. They need this win based on two reasons: 1) They should win it. 2) The Buckeyes need to jell as a team. This is a good game to make that happen.

The Buckeyes will win. They will score a ton. But the questions will be how will VMI stand up against them and what effect will it have mentally on the Buckeyes following this victory? Can this game be a turning point?

WHEN, WHERE, HOW:

The game at Value City Arena tips off at 4:30 PM ET this Saturday. If you can’t make it to the game, you can watch it on BTN, listen to it on radio 97.1 or follow on GameTracker. If you’re really good, you can do all three.
