Tall Tale, dead-on, or something else?

This was posted on KFAN Rubechat in Minneapolis by a Gopher fan who visited Columbus this past weekend:

"The OSU fans were all asking questions about "fire mason". They have a lot of respect for him, and think he could have done the same job Tressel is doing at OSU. They ask how such a small fan-base competing with 4 pro teams can have such high expectations for a program? They also understand MN is in a rebuilding year, and gave Mase a free pass for the season. They were saying how impressed everyone was with 2005 offense, and how any coach who has a team put up 600 yards vs. OSU last year, deserved an extension."

Is this plausible? Thanks for the help.

I absolutely do not believe that and would question the sanity of anyone who did. Glen Mason is a pretty good coach, and of course we root for all former Buckeyes, but we would not have won the 2002 NC with him here. You don't go from 4 minor bowl appearances in 15 years to 3 BCS bowls in 4.

jip-jip I think there is some likelihood that kind words such as those were uttered. Whether every single one of those words of comfort were absolutely meant is open to debate. There is respect for Mason in and around many parts of the Buckeye fan-base. That does not mean the opinion that "he could have done the same job Tressel is doing at OSU" would hold up. Especially if the witnesses were sworn in and reminded that they should not perjure themselves. :)
The latter part about Minny cutting Mason some slack sounds about right IMO, and I might add absolutely fair, all things considered.

But, I wouldn't trade JT for Mason now under any circumstances, and frankly, was never one of the fans hoping OSU would net Mason after Coop's ouster.

Minnesota has to ask themselves, what type of program are they? Are they a 10-win program? No way. Are they an 8-win program? Maybe. 7-win? Probably. I really don't see them doing any better than what Mason has done there. At best they're a mid-tier Big Ten team, probably behind the Big Two, PSU, Iowa, and Wisconsin. On par with Purdue and Michigan State.

To be very honest, there were more than a few of us who were very surprised when Tressel was hired over Mason. Mason was an insider from a national championship Buckeye team. He understood our traditions. He was one of us.

Andy Geiger was right, Jim Tressel was the right man. Winning lower division championships repeatedly allowed him to learn what it takes to win championships. He is a Buckeye to the core and never wanted anything more than to coach Ohio State.

I also don't think Glen Mason would have won the 2002 national championship. What Tressel imparts is social and emotional intelligence to his players. It is rooted in a very deep belief system and seems to me, despite his strong Christian beliefs, to transfer to those who do not endorse his religion.

Under Cooper, Buckeye teams did not handle pressure well in big games. Under Tressel, our teams thrive on it.

So, like others here, I have a lot of respect for Coach Mason and wish him well except when he plays Ohio State. But I'll take Coach Tressel over any other coach in America. AT any level. Period.

Thanks guys. I thought the poster in minny was making it up, but I can see how he got the reaction he did, especially if he was looking for it. Looks like he was telling the truth. I'll add that IMO some of these opinions don't seem to be especially current (not that I'd expect Buckeye fans to follow the situation closely).

If you're interested there are a couple of anti-Mason websites. FireMason.com is smart and occasionally funny if a bit dry. FireGlenMason.com takes a rowdier angle.

Thanks again, and if anybody else has anything to say I'll still be checking in.
