Super Space Cockroaches

Can someone please tell me why they made the COCKROACH, of all species, BETTER,FASTER,STRONGER than before? It was already a nearly perfect (albeit disgusting) species.

VORONEZH, January 17 (RIA Novosti) - Cockroaches conceived in space onboard the Russian Foton-M bio satellite have developed faster and become hardier than 'terrestrial' ones, a research supervisor said on Thursday.
The research team has been monitoring the cockroaches since they were born in October. The scientists established that their limbs and bodies grew faster.
"What is more, we have found out that the creatures... run faster than ordinary cockroaches, and are much more energetic and resilient," Dmitry Atyakshin said.

Took some summer courses at a campus completely infested outside (thankfully, not in our building). We'd walk outside and see a carpet of them scatter and hear all the "shh shh shh" sounds as they ran away. If they'd all been making the "bionic man" twanging noises... that would have been neat!

Can't remember the exact episode but the X-Files had this covered with engineered roaches

I just don't understand. I mean, there are thousands of species they could have picked to mess with up in space. Why the cockroach?

It's a species that is already nearly impossible to get rid of without more poison than is healthy to live around. They can and will eat and survive on anything, or nothing for long periods of time. Why choose THIS particular bug to make into a super bug?

*sigh* It just makes no sense to me.

weird how just being up in space would alter anything like that.. what if a human was born and raised on a spacestation? wonder what the effects would be
