Quick hits from today's Ohio State scrimmage
by Doug Lesmerises
Saturday August 22, 2009
D.L.
Terrelle Pryor, shown here in practice earlier in the preseason, looked OK but was limited by his inability to run and the pressure from the defensive line in today's jersey scrimmage.
Quick hits from today's jersey scrimmage, won by the defense and controlled by the defense for much of the day:
* Terrelle Pryor was, by my unofficial stats, 17 of 26 for 141 yards and one touchdown, a 3-yard pass to tight end Jake Ballard. Ballard also caught the ball on the first play of the day, as Pryor rolled right and found Ballard rolling with him.
Generally, the passing game was OK. It was hard to look better than that with constant pressure from the first-team defense, which recorded six sacks against Pryor, who was wearing a black no-contact jersey and was ruled down when touched by a defensive player. But many of those sacks - two by Cameron Heyward and one each by Thaddeus Gibson, Doug Worthington, Ross Homan and Jermale Hines - were legit with pressure right in his face
* Andy Miller and J.B. Shugarts shared the duties at the left tackle spot, while Mike Adams worked only with the third team. Jim Tressel said the tackle order at the moment is Miller-Shugarts-Adams, while Ballard said he thought the season would start with Miller working there and Shugarts pushing him. Bottom line is that based on today, the most important day of the preseason for evaluations, Adams looks to be out of the fight to start there.
* Cameron Heyward had to be helped off the field with a right ankle injury, had ice on his ankle the rest of the scrimmage and was on crutches at the end of the game, but Tressel said he should be fine and the injury isn't serious. Tressel said every injured player is expected back for the Navy game and maybe by the end of practice next week.
Among the players who didn't dress today were guard Justin Boren, linebacker Austin Spitler, tight end Jake Stoneburner, defensive end Lawrence Wilson, cornerback Travis Howard and defensive back Zach Domicone. Receiver Lamaar Thomas was dressed but didn't play with a minor injury. Freshman running back Jaamal Berry, who had missed practice Wednesday, did play.
* Receiver Ray Small and defensive lineman Rob Rose both played but clearly haven't worked themselves back into the position that their past performance would suggest. Both worked only with the third team.
* The first-team receivers were DeVier Posey, Dane Sanzenbacher and Taurian Washington, with Washington looking like a favorite of Pryor's. Pryor in the shotgun with three receivers, a tight end and a tailback next to him was the most popular formation for the first team, which also ran a share of I formation.
* Dan Herron ran strong as the No. 1 back, with Brandon Saine backing him up. Freshman Jordan Hall looked good as a No. 3 tailback option, making more plays than fellow freshman Jaamal Berry.
* Andre Amos and Devon Torrence continued to share the first-team reps at the cornerback spot opposite Chimdi Chekwa.
* Ross Homan, who hurt his knee in practice Wednesday, played some and looked very good, but was held out of the second half of the scrimmage as a precaution. Brian Rolle was the starting middle linebacker with Etienne Sabino starting on the strongside in Spitler's absence.
Offense struggles in scrimmage
The defense gets to keep its scarlet jerseys through the fall after downing the offense, 52-44 at the jersey scrimmage today in Ohio Stadium.
My quick report:
INJURED (sat out): TE Jake Stoneburner, LB Austin Spitler, DB Zach Domicone, OL Justin Boren, CB Travis Howard, WR Lamaar Thomas, DE Lawrence Wilson
Also, DE Cameron Heyward rolled an ankle during the scrimmage. Coach Jim Tressel did not think it was serious, and also said the other injured players should all be back prior to the opener against Navy.
PREVIOUSLY BANGED UP, BUT PLAYED: RB Jaamal Berry, LB Ross Homan
-- QB Rundown:
Terrelle Pryor looked good, for the most part. He was under duress a lot, and was "sacked" (touched up) six times, including one stretch of 3 sacks in a 5-play span. Most of those came on passing downs, but still...
In 11 possessions, Pryor was 17 of 27 for 128 yards, with one TD -- a 3-yarder to TE Jake Ballard. He also led two drives that ended in FG attempts -- one good, one missed. Four of his drives were 3-and-out.
Joe Bauserman did not look great. Reportedly, he has been ill and banged up lately, so take that for what it's worth. In 8 possessions, he was 7 of 16 for 59 yards. He led two drives that ended in FG tries -- one good, one dropped snap. Four of his drives were 3-and-outs.
Kenny Guiton, the freshman, struggled big-time. In 7 possessions, 6 were 3-and-out and he had only one first down on the other. He was 5 of 11 for 8 yards.
Justin Siems was in for two drives, one 3-and-out and the other netting one first down. He was 3 of 7 for 23 yards.
OSU ran four possessions with scout-teamers simulating the Navy triple-option. They scored on two of those four drives, once a FG and the other a 33-yard run by "QB" (a safety at OSU) Rocco Pentello.
-- Big deal on the O-line: Rotating at first-team left tackle were Andy Miller and J.B. Shugarts. Mike Adams, who previously was rotating with Miller, now is third behind those two, Tressel said. In Boren's absence, Andrew Moses and freshman Cory Linsley rotated with the first team at LG.
Beaten on sacks (at least without benefit of replay): Jim Cordle, Linsley, Shugarts. The other sacks came on blitzes and it was hard to tell where the breakdowns were.
-- The RBs looked good, and the run blocking generally solid.
Dan Herron finished with 10 carries for 53 yards and appeared in fine form, tough up the middle with some wiggle.
Brandon Saine didn't get a lot of work, and was 5/20.
Berry also was used sparingly, finishing 4/5.
Converted FB Jermil Martin had a nice 10-yard run and finished 4/16.
Besides Pentello, the longest run came from freshman Jordan Hall, a 27-yard burst. He ended 5/41.
-- DeVier Posey had some fine catches at WR and appears to be Pryor's favorite target. He had 4 catches for 61 yards. He did appear to run one wrong route, though, and short-armed another potential catch.
-- Other WRs:
Taurian Washington mostly caught outlet passes, finishing 6/32
Dane Sanzenbacher 1/5
Duron Carter 2/20
Ray Small (running with the third team), 2/18
Grant Schwartz, 3/16
-- TEs had a good day. Ballard had the TD, plus another 15-yard catch. Freshman Reid Fragel had a 12-yard grab, giving the position 3/30.
-- The six sacks: 2 by Heyward before his injury, and 1 apiece by Thaddeus Gibson, Doug Worthington, Homan, and Jermale Hines.
-- Others who impressed me:
Backup LB Storm Klein recovered a fumble, then later tipped and nearly intercepted a pass.
Homan, though he didn't play a lot.
The defensive line in general
K Aaron Pettrey, who made FGs of 44, 51 and 57 yards.
Jersey Scrimmage Breakdown
By Brandon Castel
After capturing the Scarlet jerseys in the spring for the first time in quite a while, the Ohio State defense looked determined Saturday to defend their big victory in the semi-annual jersey scrimmage.
Despite a late rally from the offense, in which they actually managed to tie the game at 42 points apiece, the defense held on to win the coveted jerseys 52-44 in a game that truly was never as close as the coaching staff made it, as the offense totaled only two touchdowns (one on a 33-yard scramble by Rocco Pentello, who was running the Navy offense).
Terrelle Pryor did connect with Jake Ballard for a touchdown but the offensive line allowed seven (touch) sacks and their Hook-and-Ladder attempt on the final play fell a good 30 yards short of the end zone, preserving the win for the defense.
Observations:
Offensively, the Buckeyes struggled to move the ball consistently ? primarily due to the unpredictability of the offensive line ? with the exception of Pryor?s 13-play drive on the second possession of the scrimmage. Pryor did hook up with tight end Jake Ballard for the only real offensive touchdown of the day, but overall the passing game lacked the punch it needed to compete with this Ohio State defense. Saddled with a black ?no contact? jersey, Pryor unofficially completed 17 of his 28 pass attempts for 131 yards during the scrimmage. He looked good in the short and intermediate passing game with the exception of one bad drive late in the scrimmage where he skipped a ball to DeVier Posey and pulled the string on another pass to Boom Herron over the middle.
They didn?t try much deep, but when they did, things didn?t go too well. Pryor too much air under a long ball to Posey that was broken up by Devon Torrence and Nate Oliver. He threw a good ball to Sanzenbacher in the end zone, but it was broken up by Andre Amos on a potential pass interference no-call. Later in the scrimmage, Duron Carter had a step and a half on Amos down the left sideline on a play that looked like a sure 50-yard touchdown before Joe Bauserman overthrew the ball just out of Carter?s reach.
While they didn?t complete any of those deep balls, they may have helped to loosen up the defense against the run, as Herron, Brandon Saine and Jordan Hall combined for 121 yards rushing on just 21 attempts, an average of nearly 5.8 yards per carry. Herron?s (10 carries, 53 yards) biggest contribution came on his back-to-back 10 yard runs when the offense was backed up to its own five yard line, and Saine (6 carries, 17 yards) had some tough, hard-nosed runs that drew the praise of Tressel after the scrimmage.
The most exciting runner of the day, however, was Hall (5 carries, 46 yards), who appears to be moving ahead of fellow freshman Jaamal Berry (5 carries, 6 yards) in the race for the No. 3 running back spot. A high school teammate of Pryor?s, Hall had the prettiest run of the day when he bounced outside to the left for a 26-yard run that he finished with a stiff arm on Jermale Hines.

The stiff arm has not left the house!
scout teamers were stuffed for 0 or negative yards on about 1 or 2 dozen snaps. One late play was contained inside, and suddenly Pentello broke free. Not a concern.MililaniBuckeye;1521077; said:I'm trying to convince myself to not be worried over the fact that scout teamers score on half their drives running the Navy offense, whilst our offense essentially couldn't do shit. Glad to see that things aren't as bad as the "two scores on four drives" would imply.jwinslow;1521080; said:scout teamers were stuffed for 0 or negative yards on about 1 or 2 dozen snaps. One late play was contained inside, and suddenly Pentello broke free. Not a concern.
Until jwins brought some perspective on it, it was indeed hard for me to not be at least somewhat concerned that our scout team scored on two of four drives using Navy's flexbone.OregonBuckeye;1521082; said:I'm trying really hard to believe you're really trying hard.
